With two young homeowners who both cook, this kitchen was remodeled with more light and better use of space to make the most of the room. By removing a pantry and soffits, the designer added more space while new lighting brightened the room. A clean transitional design balances warm white and brown cabinetry with stainless steel accents.
With a soaring truss ceiling and two islands, this large French country style kitchen swathes its space in shades of butter yellow and blue. The cabinets reach 10 feet high, taking advantage of the room’s lofty height and adding extra storage options. Two sinks, dishwashers and refrigerators make plenty of extra storage, prep and clean-up for these homeowners to entertain.
Warm yellow walls and terra cotta floors set a welcoming and sunny tone for this large hacienda kitchen. With custom carved cabinets, hand-painted tile and reclaimed wood ceiling beams, the kitchen is filled with authentic details. Functional design—multiple prep areas and a layout planned with the homeowners’ children in mind—gives the room an efficient flow.
The combination of contemporary and vintage pieces gives this kitchen a fresh look. Classic white Shaker-style maple cabinets, complemented by super White island granite countertops and light gray quartz perimeter counters, keep the look light. Contrasting elements like the globe pendants and the stainless steel range hood offer period and contemporary style to this 1910 Edwardian home.
With entertainment in mind, this kitchen allows the homeowners to prepare and serve food while visiting with guests. A full-length Thermador wine refrigerator couples with a Thermador French-door refrigerator. An elevated boomerang-shaped glass bar top offers a spot to park a wine glass and chat with someone working at the prep sink, while the island’s honed marble counter with a wraparound corner adds stand-out style to this mingling spot.
Bright, tropical-colored cabinetry in finishes of oranges, blues and greens enliven this open plan kitchen. The homeowners selected the vibrant palette for the cabinets, which were hand-painted and distressed on site by a local artisan and designed to match the yellow-orange walls. Spanish Mediterranean-inspired tile graces the backsplash and a tall plaster hood stretches up the length of the 13-foot ceiling. Topping off this colorful pool-house kitchen is a 48-inch cobalt blue Viking range.
Contemporary and Asian, this kitchen combines fengshui principles with modern materials. Red-stained maple cabinetry complements the homeowner’s selected cherry blossom theme. A custom mosaic tile backsplash over the cooktop features a blossoming branch profiled against a rising sun. Another custom detail, wooden cabinet doors carved with the Chinese symbol for prosperity, graces the kitchen’s baking wall.
A turn-of-the-century kitchen features modern standards while maintaining its original period charm. A vertical beadboard backsplash, distressed cabinetry and a hammered copper sink embody the style of the era, while the kitchen’s original Carolina pine flooring, brass spring hinges and push plates bring true authenticity to the room.
Once a dim and cramped galley kitchen, this remodeled space takes cues from Japanese design in its achievement of horizontal flow, airy feel and improved use of space. Bamboo cabinetry with a horizontal grain complements the horizontal glass tile backsplash. High windows and a light, neutral color scheme offer a fresh look.
Perched on a ridge, this 1820 cabin home boasts unspoiled views of the woods and river with a luxurious kitchen to match its resplendent surroundings. What was once a rough cabin interior now features handcrafted mahogany cabinetry, Typhoon green granite countertops and fumed wide plank pine flooring. Natural limestone graces both the walls and the floor outside of the main work corridor. With a walk-in pantry and two refrigerator/freezers, this light-filled and spacious kitchen also boasts plenty of food storage.
A Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home takes cues from the great architect’s use of horizontal lines and natural materials to inspire a large kitchen suitable for entertaining. Double sliding doors next to the wrap-around wet bar and built-in coffee maker conceal a walk-in pantry and associated clutter. Multiple seating areas provide plenty of options for hosting guests. Varying cabinet heights offer movement and visual interest.
Clean, horizontal lines and a neutral palette give this kitchen a minimal, sleek look. A mix of materials—from stainless steel appliances to anodized aluminum cabinets, black oak flooring to a warm alder countertop bar—creates variation in neutral color schemes and texture. The horizontal theme echoes across the room from wide horizontal cabinet pulls to the cabinetry’s horizontal veneer. A 9-centimeter thick alder countertop offers a casual dining space while accenting the horizontal design.
When this family of five moved from the city to the suburbs, they wanted to build an eco-friendly new home with an open-plan living space featuring a green kitchen. Environmentally conscientious products fill the kitchen, including LEED-certified cabinetry with a no-VOC finish and no added formaldehyde, a recycled glass backsplash, and a recycled redwood counter. A whole-house lighting system makes saving energy easier, and a PEX plumbing system allowed for the installation of a gray-water recover system. An island dining spot lets the kids snack while Mom and Dad cook on the Energy Star appliances.
A small kitchen gets a big makeover for a budget under $40,000. Selecting a 30-inch Viking range that had slight damage gave these aspiring chefs a professional-grade appliance at an affordable price. The homeowners installed the tile and sewed the banquette cushion themselves for additional cost savings. Cutting back in these areas allowed them to spend on cabinet organizers, the slate floors, LG stainless steel appliances and Corian countertops.
Remodeled to add extra light, work surfaces and storage, this kitchen now flaunts two French doors and a triple window, as well as a large island with work, storage and an eating area with plenty of seating. White cabinets and an airy neutral color scheme add to the lightness, as does open shelving to display the homeowners’ pottery collection. With seven openings to this kitchen, traffic jams have ended and the room flows smoothly to the dining room and den as well as the outdoors.
