The 3rd ngnlab.eu workshop took place at TNO - Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research in Delft, Nederlands. Two days of interesting ideas and demos presentations brought together researchers from different companies and academia from Nederlands, Germany, Slovakia and others.
Presentations and results of final discussions can be found at TNO. Some pictures from the workshop are availble here.
Final Panel discussion points are:
- Future of the NGN - How to improve cooperation between industry and academia - Standardization - Over The Top players (OTT) <-> Telco - Focus of future NGN Workshops (HBB?) - Where is the money - Money from networks or services - Operators should realize that they play OTT over their own network, and should be organised as such - Conservative role of telco, how to break that - Communication shifts to messaging, away from voice - Telco problem: the user experience, works out-of-the-shop - Companies, but also users require service guarantees, e.g. 112 - Global versus local, telco subscribers are local - Should telco’s create a “joint app store”? Could that fly? - Telco’s and OTT’s are not enemies. OTT more user oriented, telco’s should facilitate that, help/support OTT’s - Telco’s have call centers, closer user contact, also useful for OTTs - Compete or collaborate? Risk of “trojan horse”, OTT servers in telco network? - Who “owns” the customer? - QoS, would OTT invest in QoS, or better in adaptive streaming? - Why should OTT pay telco? Telco is paid by end user for fixed and mobile access - Telco business won’t change as fast as many think - Telco’s won’t just have their mobile revenues fade away, RCS could be a revenue retention model - Mixture of many things happening, cloud, OTT, telco’s adopting OTT technologies - Network neutrality? Pay for bandwidth or for specific movie? - Cautious/delicate topic, see what happened in NL a few months ago - Telco can always do special things for special customers - Network neutrality does not exclude network optimization and traffic management
• Collaboration academia — industry: win-win - New topics for university - New input, out-of-the-box, for industry - Preparing your own employees, industry needs specific expertise • How to give form to that collaboration? - Infra from industry made available to university, facilitate - Operators typically do have test beds - Special free-of-charge license - Industry should share real-life problems
4th NGN Workshop, Bratislava, 2012 - Pioneering basis research, demonstrate new solutions - IPTV-CDN-HBB - Cloud - IMS—NGN - RCS, review state of affairs - User interface, user experience, user-friendliness - New ideas, inspiring demo’s - Invite industry to bring topics to workshop, “challenge”
