Day 2 at FICOMIC at the Fira in Barcelona! This year is the XXXth edition of the Comic Fair, and there is a special area dedicated to robots…. So of course REEM is there! Come visit our stand if you are coming to the event!

Next to showing our robot to the Comic fans, the team REEM@IRI is doing tests for the RoboCup@Home competition in Mexico in June of this year. And today the team is testing ‘Who is who’, one of the many challenges of the competition. For this challenge REEM needs to enter the room through a door opening, memorize persons, detect a person and remember them. This week the team of PAL Robotics and REEM@IRI are at the Fira of Barcelona, at the International Comic Fair. REEM is part of the robot theme of this year’s event. And the group REEM@IRI is performing several tests with REEM in preparation for the RocoCup@Home competition in Mexico in June. At FICOMIC REEM has its own ‘home’ to wander around in, including a living room with sofa and dining table.. Come to FICOMIC and see how REEM avoids all these obstacles and even tries to pick up items, move through a very tight door opening and listen to our PAL Robotics’ team members giving presentations about REEM and the robotics industry!

Today at 12:00 the next International Comic Fair, edition XXX was presented at a press conference at Fira Barcelona at Plaza España. This year there will be a special exposition at the fair, called ‘Robots en su Tinta’, organized by Professor Jordi Ojeda (here a link to his blog). PAL Robotics will have a space in this area of the salon. Today Jordi Ojeda presented this year’s robotic theme at the Press Conference and REEM accompanied his presentation. During the Conference all the different areas of the Comic Fair were presented, which are the following:

- Area of the Automata
- Area of the Droides of the Galaxies
- Area of Manga
- Stands and exposition area
- Workshops
- Areas of industrial robots, robot prototypes and service robots

At every space a variety of activities are programmed that will be published on the website of FICOMIC in the next few days.

Last month, Dr. Jerry Pratt visited PAL Robotics to discuss a possible collaboration on the development of humanoid robot technology. Dr. Pratt is a principal investigator at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) in Florida USA and an expert on the analysis and control of legged locomotion. Dr. Pratt presented ongoing projects at the IHMC, which include M2V2, a lower-body humanoid robot; Mina, an exoskeleton for restoring gait in persons with paraplegia; and FastRunner, a fast, efficient, self-stabilizing bipedal running robot.

PAL Robotics started the Easter weekend with a lunch with the whole team!

La exposición “Robots en su Tinta” se podrá ver en el 30 Salón Internacional del Cómic de Barcelona, que tendrá lugar del 3 al 6 de mayo en el Palacio 8 de Fira de Barcelona. La muestra está comisariada por Jordi Ojeda, profesor de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Barcelona Tech, y cuenta con la colaboración activa de varias empresas del sector de la robótica participando en las presentaciones y exhibiciones que se realizarán durante los cuatro días del salón. En especial destaca la colaboración de las empresas ABB, RO-BOTICA y PAL Robotics.

PAL Robotics (www.pal-robotics.com) es una empresa especializada en el desarrollo de productos y servicios robóticos que pueden convertirse en una parte fundamental de nuestra vida cotidiana. El robot REEM, un robot humanoide diseñado para ayudar a las personas en centros comerciales, ferias o grandes espacios en general, estará presente en el salón interactuando de forma autónomo con las personas que visiten el salón.

Se podrá ver como el robot REEM se preparará para las pruebas @HOME a las que se someterá en su participación en la ROBOCUP’2012 (www.robocup2012.org), que este año se celebrará a finales de junio en la ciudad de Monterrey (México). La preparación de la prueba se está desarrollando con un equipo formado por la empresa PAL Robotics, el Instituto de Robótica e Informática Industrial (CSIC-UPC) y la asociación de estudiantes AESS de la UPC, en el proyecto que lleva por nombre REEM@IRI (robocup.pal-robotics.com). En la exposición “Robots en su Tinta” se replicará un salón de una vivienda (sofá, muebles, mesa, sillas, etc), y veremos en primicia como un robot social trabaja en un entorno doméstico en los ensayos preparatorios en el desafío que supone competir en la  ROBOCUP’2012 .

This robot is called REEM and is a product of PAL Robotics, a Spanish engineering company. INNOROBO takes place in Lyon-France from March 14 to 16 and is considered the most important robot event in Europe.

REEM will be functioning at the event as a dynamic information point and guide. It will show  its capabilities at the demonstration area during various specific technical demonstrations, and of course you will be able to interact with REEM yourself. REEM can mimic your movements, can guide you to an indicated location or can provide you any information about the event, conferences or about the city of Lyon.
