Get ALEC out of Carson City

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is a right-wing legislation factory that ghost writes conservative bills and then gives them to members of state legislatures to introduce as their own.

The bills are designed to serve ALEC's corporate funders at any expense - including public health, public safety, and our very Democracy.

Corporations are fleeing ALEC amid public scrutiny, and lawmakers in many states have decided it's time to part ways with ALEC, too. It's time for Nevada legislators to end ties as well.

Now it's been discovered that the Legislative Counsel Bureau maintains a yearly membership with ALEC. These are taxpayer dollars going to support ALEC's attacks on working Americans.

In Nevada, more than 20,000 jobs depend on public lands and each year active outdoor recreation generates $116 million in state tax revenue.

Places like Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, and Black Rock Desert are able to bring people from all over the country because of their pristine and awe-inspiring environments.

Tule Springs could be the next Red Rock Canyon. Its world class fossil resources would provide a diverse attraction to bring and extend the stays of tourists from around the world.

Tell Joe Heck and Dean Heller Your Housing Story

These are very difficult times in Nevada. The last thing we need is our elected leaders standing in the way of help coming to those who need it.

Joe Heck and Dean Heller have both been doing just this. Heller proudly states that he "voted against all" government programs that would have helped homeowners, while Joe Heck keeps flip flopping on whether he supports Mitt Romney's plan to "not try and stop the foreclosure process."

Treasured places like Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, Sunset Park, and the myriad of parks along the Truckee River have benefited from the LWCF. These are places that enrich our lives and make our communities stronger.

Unfortunately, Congress has slashed LWCF funding year after year. In fact, the LWCF has only been fully funded two times since 1965. We cannot continue to disinvest in our communities and basic quality of life places.

Nevada has the best potential of any state for renewable energy development, with bountiful sun, consistent wind and fabulous soil. But for far too long we've been sold an energy plan that sees solar and wind and biomass as some distant future.

That future has long ago begun and Nevada risks leaving its bounty unharvested. Renewable energy needs to be the first order of business in Nevada.

Harvesting nature's resources is not only good for the environment and a critical foreign policy goal, it's a boon to the state's economy. Out congressional leaders must commit real support for renewable energy development through commitments to support the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009.
