Allen has also immersed himself in the study of traditional African-American banjo styles. Here, he plays a reproduction of a civil-war banjo in style of the era... "with a collaborative twist".

Ol' Time Banjo production notes: One evening, a good friend of mine from www.voyagerrecords.com came over and played one of their latest productions. Allen’s cut was the first one on the disc and I immediately heard beats behind it in my head. Permissions ensued, and I went to work adding VST instrument beats to the track. Since the tempo varies widely, I literally had to manually adjust the tempo map every 2 beats… but it was way worth it.

Apollo production notes: I had been doing some work with DJ Muad’deep in the Seattle area and simply asked him to add an Indian Rasa flavor to the track. It worked out well and is always a pleasure to work with him.

Cosmic Birthday Boy production notes: I ran across Seren’s myspace page and was immediately struck by her poetic abilities for lyrics. One day, she emailed me with several poems and asked me to think about putting one of them to song. I said that it just doesn’t work that way for me… she said… “Just try it”. So one day I called up a song I was working on and pulled out a poem… The vocal melody lines of CBB practically wrote themselves in about 15 minutes. Check out the lyrics, as they take us through the history of mankind on earth – as being left to fend for ourselves as a birthday present for the creator that had long since been laid on the shelf.

Ophelia's Song production notes: I ran across Musetta in a CCMixter offer for others to mix the track. I took the challenge and the only downtempo mix of Ophelia’s song was born. They’re amazingly talented and have become good friends!

Oceanis production notes: Henta and I have a unique history… She’s from Guildford, England (where I went to university, but did not know her then). I met her in 2006 in a special outdoor performance event north of Seattle. She was introduced as being from London… however, I stumbled upon the fact that she was from Guildford and we became fast friends. Although the vocals for oceanis were done in the UK, amazingly Henta now lives very nearby in the Pacific Northwest (It's a small world, afterall).

Revolution production notes: Marcell is a longtime buddy and music collaborator. His talent and enthusiasm is boundless, as is his genius for being the “Reason Master”… I’l only tell you the story of how the Beatle’s Revolution lyrics came about, if you buy me a few scotches “McCallan 12yr old + please!”

Summertime production notes: You can’t get classier or sweeter than Gail. A Northwest Jazz singer of extreme talent and notoriety… I just had to do a duet with her. Upon hearing that I wanted to do Gershwin’s Summertime, she said “Paleeeze… everyone’s done that one to death”. Upon hearing the basic tracks, she flipped and we sang it live in the studio with me conducting the nuances… very intense, very cool experience.

reviews:

"I love the aesthetics of this mix! It is so rich and colorful! When I listen to it, I get the feeling you get when you look at the paintings of Van Gogh, for example...feeling of warm nights and gentle summer breeze. I especially like the wideness of the stereo imaging!" - a fan in Belgrade, Serbia
