COSMOS is a network of National Contact points for the Space theme under the EU's 7th Framework Programme for Research. The objective of the project is to build a network of Space NCPs. The participating NCPs will identify and exchange good practice, elaborate and conduct training courses for the NCP staff, gather and provide up-to-date information on Space and neighbouring topics, improve project partner search and develop common concepts to raise awareness for Space in FP7 and the Space NCPs. Thus a more balanced high quality NCP service will be ensured for the benefit of new as well as experi-enced FP7 applicants. One objective of COSMOS is to harmonise services offered by the participating Space NCPs.

Space Theme in FP7
Objective
The aim of the Space theme under FP7 is to support a European Space Programme focusing on applications such as "Global monitoring for environment and security" (GMES) with benefits for citizens and for the competitiveness of the European space industry.
This will contribute to the development of a European space policy, complementing efforts by Member States and by other key players, including the European Space Agency (ESA).
Why is it important?
In the last 40 years, Europe has built up excellent technological competence , both nationally and through ESA. Sustaining a competitive industry, including manufacturers, service providers and operators, requires new research and technologies.
Space applications bring important benefits to citizens by virtue of technological spin-off effects and are indispensable in a high tech society.
What will be funded?
Emphasis will be given to the following activities:
Strengthening space foundations - support research for long term needs such as space transportation, bio-medicine, life and physical sciences in space.
Calls
European Commission
The European Commission funds Space research by selecting project proposals submitted following the publication of a "Call for proposals". The calls of the Space Work Programme are announced on the FP7 calls page.
European Space Agency
Companies from FP7 participating countries will have the opportunity to participate in best practise procurements by European Space Agency (ESA) in the context of GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) space component activities. Read more...
