USBC Champ: Katie Carguilo
Company: Counter Culture Coffee
Total years as a Barista: 11
Reason for Competing: I want to showcase these amazing coffees and challenge myself technically and professionally. Competition is the perfect platform for that. Also, it's a great place to see old friends and make new in the community of coffee people who are involved in the barista competitions.
2nd Place: Charles Babinski
Company: Intelligentsia Coffee
Reason for Competing: Service! I wanted to find a way to explicitly bring what I do every day in the shop to the competition. Part of it was that I really love what I do every day and wanted to share that and part of it was that competition is usually so glaringly divorced from real bar service.
3rd Place: Chris Baca
Company: Verve Coffee Roasters
Total years working as a Barista: 6
Reason for Competing: I try and show people that making twelve drinks in fifteen minutes doesn't have to be incredibly mundane. The judges are always secondary on my list of people to please...the spectators come first. The moment competitions becomes too boring no one will care about them. When no one cares the competition will eventually cease to exist. My performances are my humble attempt to prevent that and inspire others to do the same.
4th Place: Devin Chapman
Company: Coava Coffee Roasters
Total years working as a Barista: 2
Reason for Competing: Love for coffee, love for service, love for sport.
5th Place: Jared Truby
Company: Verve Coffee Roasters
Total years working as a Barista: 7
Quality Control of Retail at Verve coffee. I live and breathe espresso, growth and forward thinking! I love the depth of barista craft! My favorite thing about coffee is that no one has a right answer. We all have opinions!
6th Place: Travis Beckett
Company: Peregrine Espresso
Reason for Competing: You find a coffee you like, you use some pretty glasses, you play some nice music. It's a 15 minute long dream party.

2nd: Jon Ferguson
Company: Flying Goat Coffee
Total years working as a Barista: 8
Reason for Competing: After several years of judging competitions and having never competed in an individual competition before in his life (which he can, or wants, to recall), he is very happy with the results. He remains persistent in his search for greater coffee experiences and is already preparing for next year's Brewer's Cup and US Cup Tasters Championship.
3rd: Dut Goodman
Company: Independent
Total years working as a Barista: 3
I'd first like to give a huge shout out to everybody that supported me, mainly my South-East coffee family. The guys at Crema Coffee in Nashville did a killer job with the coffee I used and I'd be on the lookout for them to do big things in the upcoming days. I'm looking forward to what this year will also bring to me, as opportunity comes your way, my only advice is to seize it. Thanks again to everybody that showed me love during this journey. -Dut
4th: Mike Marquard
Company: Half & Half
Total years working as a Barista: 4
Reason for Competing: I am looking to improve the quality of every hand-made cup of coffee from our coffee bar. This was a good challenge to get us focused on that goal.
5th: Robbie Krask
Company: The Wormhole
Total years working as a Barista: 1.5
Reason for Competing: To expand my knowledge and further cultivate my technique and approach to coffee. I am very new to coffee, but I try to soak up as much knowledge as I can from as many sources as I can.
6th: Lorenzo Perkins
Company: Cuvee Coffee
Total years working as a Barista: 10
Reason for Competing: I have a lot of spare time.

Distinguished Author
David Schomer
David Schomer founded Espresso Vivace, Seattle on April 18, 1988. He began with the concept that caffe espresso is a new culinary art and has worked tirelessly on this beautiful coffee since then. Scanning the Index of Periodical Literature (oh thank god for Google) he was shocked that there was no standard technique available. So that is the genesis of "the little green book" that he is honored for today. " Espresso Coffee: Professional Techniques" is on its ninth printing in English and is also available in Japanese, Korean and Russian by visiting Vivace's website at www.espressovivace.com.
