I am one blessed girl. Married to my best friend. Mother to 3 delightful girls - Daisy, Anna Belle and Lila Mae (they can never leave the South!) Trying to live each day to the glory of God, knowing that is where life to the full is found! Loving my new journey in blog-world! Thanks for stopping by! Hope you find some inspiration!
Just a quick project for today.
I recently purchased an amazing drop leaf table at a yard sale. You can see it here.
The purchase of that table, caused me to rearrange many of my other side tables. I have been using this skirted table for years. (In another spot in the family room.) I bought the cloth for it about 10 years ago at Bombay Company (whatever happened to that store?) I still love the color, but decided it was time to give it a topper. Seeing as how I have a blog now, I am motivated to go ahead and make this little topper.
This project was inspired by a Christmas tree skirt that Miss Mustard Seed (one of my all time favorite blogs!) made. You can see how she made that here. It was the inspiration for this little table topper.
Here is what the table looked like without the topper. Not terrible. . . just lacking.
I started with a trip to the fabric store. I couldn’t decide if I wanted a linen or a brown and cream check. When I found this 100% linen brown and cream check on the clearance rack for $5 a yard, I knew I had found my fabric! It could not be more perfect! Unfortunately, you cannot see how great this fabric is, because your photographer still needs help with her camera skills!
I measured the table to see how big I needed the topper to be. I wanted it to hang off the sides about 6 inches.
I folded the fabric into a square and then cut a piece of yarn 1/2 the diameter of the topper. I added a little bit to the length of the yarn to be able to tie it around the end of a pencil. Then, holding the pencil upright, I drew onto the fabric.
I attached the yarn onto the corner of the fabric with a safety pin. I still had to hold it, but it helped to secure it.
After I had drawn the circle, I cut it out.
Next, I sewed a straight stitch about 1 inch from the edge.
I then cut 3 strips of fabric that were each 3 inches wide.
I sewed a long straight stitch along the edge of each piece and ruffled it by pulling a thread. Miss Mustard Seed did not do any sewing, only gluing. I am sure that her method would work here.
I pinned each piece onto the top of the topper.
I sewed right on top of the ruffling stitch. The idea is for it to be messy. I love that kind of sewing! I love how it turned out! Very shabby!
Notice the great wooden finial on the table. I found that at a yard sale this past weekend for $1!
The picture on the table is one of Daisy and Anna Belle when they were 4 and 2. They were dressed up as “Little House on the Prairie” girls for Halloween. Such sweet times! Not to worry that Lila Mae is left out. Her picture is on the sconce hanging on the wall!
This is the back corner of our family room. We just recently put this table in here when we had hardwood floors put in. We did have a desk here with our computer on it. But, thanks to laptops and iPads, we no longer need a big desk for the computer! I love having a table in here! It is the perfect place for homework, school projects, and my craft projects!
Enjoy your weekend!
