About DEV

DEV (Digital Entertainment Ventures) is a New York-based firm that provides guidance, seed and early stage capital to companies that are transforming media and entertainment.  Its clients and portfolio companies span music, TV, film, games, publishing and social media.  They use innovative advertising, promotional and technology platforms, and the latest devices from Internet-enabled TVs to tablets to mobile handsets.

A radical transformation in media and entertainment is underway, and is uniquely linked to New York City.  The city’s traditional media businesses have been battered by the decline of CD, newspaper and magazine sales, the flattening of pay TV subscribers and DVD sales, and the explosion of mobile devices that enable the consumption of digital media.  This has also created unprecedented opportunity for smart digital solutions.  Many of these new models are evolving in New York City’s flourishing startup ecosystem, which has benefitted from an influx of traditional media talent.  DEV is committed to fostering the growth of these next generation companies.

Led by experienced digital media executive Alan McGlade and former entrepreneur and venture capitalist Michael Yang, DEV supports its portfolio companies with a high level of involvement.  The DEV team takes an active role in business plan development, financial modeling, market analysis, IP and go-to-market strategy.

DEV offers investors a unique opportunity to invest in promising early stage, high growth companies, some of which may be fully owned and incubated by DEV.  Using New York City as a geographic focus, DEV portfolio companies are vetted and guided by McGlade, Yang and a team of experienced advisors from media and entertainment.

DEV’s fund has made initial investments in several companies including web-based live music platform Stageit and mobile gaming company Mad Humans.  Stageit was launched in the fall of 2010 by CEO and music industry veteran Evan Lowenstein, who has nearly 20 years of experience as a recording artist, award-winning writer and executive.  Mad Humans was a DEV-incubated concept; the game will launch prior to the upcoming presidential election.

Alan McGlade has over two decades of experience in taking companies from early conceptual stage to significant market player in television and digital media. For the last nine years he was the Chief Executive and a member of the Board of Directors of MediaNet, an early player in providing legal digital music downloads.  Prior to MediaNet, he was CEO of interactive music video channel Video Jukebox Network (The Box Music Television), which he sold to MTV in 2001. He was also the President of targeted cable advertising and marketing companies StarNet and Adlink.

Michael Yang has extensive experience as a venture capitalist and entrepreneur.  He is currently a senior venture/funds formation attorney.  Previously he was a venture capitalist for Divine Interventures and Sandbox Strategies, both in Chicago.  In 1999, he founded and served as CTO for enterprise resource collaboration platform Redmind, which he sold to Ikimbo in 2001.

The DEV Executive Council includes Joseph Saviano, partner and chief financial officer of NY-based private equity firm Baker Capital; D. Walker Wainwright, founder and chief executive officer of independent financial advisory firm Wainwright and Co. LLC; and Alan Goodstadt, partner at NY-based boutique investment bank Redwood Capital.
