Ubud is often the first place that Kuta based tourists visit on a day trip. It offers a totally different scene which only gets better the longer you stay. The great thing about Ubud is that downtown is loaded with accommodation options to fit every budget. Jl. Hanoman and Jl. Kajeng, both downtown offer handy accommodation for people without transport. Jl. Penestenan slightly out of town is one of the many other options for a quieter stay.

Australian expat Ian Pieter van Wieringen appeared in Gianyar District Court today charged with possession of hashish. Mr. van Wieringen is a painter who has lived in Ubud for 35 years. Ubud is in Gianyar district hence that court being used.

Ubud is sometimes referred to as the heart of Bali’s culture. That’s debatable but one thing is for sure, it does have enough stuff for an interesting ‘culture oriented’ day trip. One of the little packages that is user friendly and perfect for people on a short time line is Pura Saraswati and Cafe Lotus.

Mark Cripp (’Cripsy’) from Australia, owner of Kangkung Cottages in Jasri, East Bali, passed away recently, while working on a freighter in Australia. He was around 50 years old and suffered a heart attack. It always comes as a huge shock whenever someone you know passes away, especially the ones who seem healthy and full of life. I only knew Cripsy as an acquaintance, having stayed at his place 3 times over the last 4 years. He was quite a character and a good bloke in my opinion.

Bali’s tourism industry owes a lot to surfing, after all it was the surf at Kuta Beach that first drew Aussies here in the 60’s and 70’s. The surf movie is a part of the culture too, with epics like The Endless Summer, Morning of the Earth and Riding Giants leaving viewers not just with a sense or awe, but with a vivid memory of the place they were filmed.

Most of the accommodation in Kuta Lombok is budget style, simple places lined up on the beach road. There are however mid-range and luxury places, which will no doubt increase. The great thing about the cheap places in Kuta Lombok is even with a cold water shower, it feels luxurious after the salt water showers of the Gili Islands.

At the moment Bali is in a kind of transition. The wet season is dragging its feet to a close and the tourists are dragging theirs. Things are looking up, with new businesses opening, but so far Bali hasn’t kicked it into gear.
