Recognising a need for a regular, supportive platform for emerging artists with fresh ideas, international producing art-house Cryptic launched Cryptic Nights in 2009 and has presented more than 116 artists at CCA, Glasgow.  Crossing creative boundaries with live music, visual and sonic art, film and new media, Cryptic Nights is a shape-shifting programme of regular events presenting a selection of the highest quality emerging artists.

Many emerging artists have enjoyed great success since presenting at Cryptic Nights, highlights include:

James Houston launched Cryptic Nights in 2009 and claimed a Scottish BAFTA award in the same year for his film Big Ideas (Don’t Get Any), gaining praise from Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood and over 1.3 million views online.

Jon Thompson and Alison Craighead premiered “A short film about war” in 2009, the film has recently been shortlisted for the Samsung Art+ Award.

Joshua Armstrong presented The Sounding in 2010, and was later invited to direct Cryptic’s The Little Match Girl Passion, to widespread critical acclaim.

Anna Meredith launched her songs at Cryptic Nights in 2010 and was awarded a prestigious Paul Hamlyn Foundation Music Award in 2010.

In 2011 Cryptic Nights presented Inducer by Robbie Thomson and Jack Wrigley and Joyride by Sven Werner.  Both of these projects performed to capacity audiences and, as a result, will be presented as part of Cryptic’s prestigious Sonic-a launch event in November 2012.
