Season 8 which is the latest series follows the life of crew members in the vast Bering Sea, aboard four fishing vessels for fishing crabs during the two dangerous crab fishing seasons. The crab fishing vessels are Cornelia Marie, Time Bandit, Northwestern and Wizard and there are also other small boats featured in this season but the wild cat is the most notable one. This series emphasizes so much of the dangers the crew members of the crab fishing vessels are exposed to while they are plying their trade of catching crabs. They duck heavy crab fishing posts into position, move thousands of crabs across the deck and also lean over the rails so as to set the posts into position.

This series also depicts the dangers associated with being on the boats in the crab fishing grounds in the Bering Sea which is considered one of the stormiest and coldest waters in the world. Each episode on the new series during the 2012 season is based on a theme or a situation that occurs on one or several boats. There are other side stories and sideshows that delve on the background, plus the activities of other crew members especially the new members “greenhorns” on some of the boats. The captains of the fleet are prominently featured in all episodes, highlighting their competition with fellow captains and their relationship with their crews. This season is about the competition among the captains of the different boats in their hunt for crabs in the dangerous fishing grounds.

Some of the common themes highlighted throughout the storyline of this new season are the rivalries between some of the fleet captains especially between Sig Hansen the Northwestern’s captain and Jonathan Hilstrand the Time Bandit’s captain. It also shows family ties in the fleet as brothers sig, Norm and Edgar Hansen who own the Northwestern with Nick Mavar and his nephew Jake Anderson. Two sons of the late Phil Harris, Jake and Josh are on the Cornelia Marie. The Hilstrand family is on board the Time Bandit with brothers Andy, Jonathan, Neil and Jonathan’s son Scott. Brothers Keith and Monte Colburn are on board the Wizard. This series also highlights the stresses of the life in the Bering Sea for the greenhorns and also their high burn out rate.

Deadliest catch is a filmed record of everyday life in a very stressful and risky working environment. Because of these working conditions the producers resorted to censuring the language and gestures that is deemed inappropriate for family based television audiences. Simple blurring has been used in season 8 for visual disguise of such items like finger gestures, bloody injuries or crew member anonymity that is not featured.
