How to deal with people offline

by Tim on June 4, 2012

About 46 days ago Kathleen VanBeekom emailed me with a great question. If you work full time online, or even part time, you'll know what we are talking about. How people who don't have an online job treat us different.

It usually starts with your family first, where they are concerned you're not really working. They'll usually say they don't understand what you do, and continue to give you classified ads with job offers in them. Then there are the friends who think you don't ever have to work. They'll call you up, skype you, etc with just about anything whenever they aren't at their job.

I get it, it's kind of to be expected. For me it wasn't until my wife and I bought a house that the job offers stopped. And the friends will still skype me but they've learned now that I still need to work and so it's not bad. I've been fortunate enough to not really run into what Kathleen was emailing me about.

Her problem was more severe, and while I haven't come across it I certainly understand. It's people who work offline having a negative view of people who work online. As if we didn't have real jobs. It's sad really that people think they are so important that they'd treat others poorly.

Well the only thing you can really do is pray for those people. Unfortunately they just don't understand what we do. They don't get the unique challenges we face, and they don't get all the benefits we get from working for ourselves. For instance, if it's a rainy blah day and you work an offline job you have to go. If you work for yourself, you don't.

So try to stay positive. Try to focus on the benefits of your job and ignore the criticism. I know it's hard, but you're most likely not going to change the other person's opinion. At least not for a long time.

I hope this helps any of you having similar problems. Feel free to write below your experiences. Sometimes sharing and realizing we all are in similar situations is enough to help!

My Favorite Non TimTech Exchanges

May 24, 2012

So obviously I'd say StartXchange, ILoveHits, Sweeva, and ThumbVu were my favorite exchanges. But that's cuz I own them. I know first hand the time, effort, money, and sweat has been put into each of them. And I care about the people surfing there. So I have to not count them otherwise I'm being "biased". [...]
