The War of 1812 was not some distant event to southeastern Connecticut. A British blockade throughout the war trapped naval heroes and privateers on the Thames River between New London and Groton, and British attacks on both Essex and Stonington brought the war to those shores.
New London has a remarkable maritime history, from privateer ships in the Revolutionary War to whaling ships in the 19th Century and high-tech yachts that race from its harbor today. Home to the prestigious U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Barque Eagle, its compact downtown is filled with historic architecture, restaurants, museums, music, arts, culture and nightlife.
AT OpSail2000CT, more than 40 tall ships from over a dozen nations drew a crowd of nearly a million people. There was international fellowship, entertainment for crews, a Captain’s Ball, music, dancing, food, fireworks, history, art and culture.
Visiting ships and meeting crews from far and near is a favorite OpSail event, as in July 2000, when crowds flocked to tour the Coast Guard’s Barque Eagle.
