Chicago's boutique paint shop launches new paint line this evening.

Nothing can transform a room faster than a new coat of paint. But did you know that in addition to that fantastic new color is the immediate addition of pollutant levels up to 1,000 times outdoor levels! EPA studies have shown that VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) emitted from traditional household paint result in your living room having 2 to 5 times more pollutants than the air outside. These elevated pollution levels can have significant health ramifications including: eye, nose, and throat irritation; headaches, allergic skin reaction, loss of coordination, nausea; damage to liver, kidney, and central nervous system and possibly cancer.

According to the Paint Quality Institute, VOCs are not just bad for your health, they are bad for the environment too. The industry group claims traditional paints make up 10% of the ozone depleting substances in the US.

I had the pleasure of running into Michelle Quaranta, owner of Bucktown’s Colori Eco Paint Boutique, at a party last weekend, and she told me about a new line of super-smart, premium latex paint she’s introducing to the Chicago market at a launch party Thursday, Oct. 22 from 6–9 p.m. It’s called Mythic Paint, and she praises its durability and coverage (sans those nasty off-gassing VOCs, toxins, and odors of less eco-friendly options). Brush up on the 1,232 colors it comes in and meet Michelle and her team at the event. ]]>

<![CDATA[ Smart Home ]]>
If you haven’t checked out this year’s Smart Home at the Museum of Science and Industry, don’t do what I did last year, and keep putting it off until you miss it. From the photos I’ve seen, last year’s set-up was gorgeous, but from a decorating standpoint, not exactly surprising. So often green means tranquil, Zen-feeling interiors, with lots of white, wood, and earthy accoutrements. Don’t get me wrong—I love that look. But what was great about this year’s show was the bold color palette and rock-n-roll sensibility… well, in most of the rooms. Interior designer Michelle Fitzpatrick, (owner of the eco-friendly home shop Verde), who helped pull together the talent for last year’s show, was back on the case this year, putting lots of local vendors on display, from the salvaged motorcycle hubcap chandeliers by Ted Harris in the dining area to the low-VOC paint from Colori throughout the house. Nice to see green get a little sexed up.

With the holidays behind us, it's time to start shaking things up in the new year. I've been with Modern Luxury for some time, and I could not be more thrilled about taking the publishing helm here at CS Interiors. It's a move that's particularly fitting timewise, considering that while most people are headed to the gym for a short-lived January fitness regime, my wife and I are headed to the Mart for tile, fixtures and hand woven rugs. We're launching a top-to-bottom makeover in our Andersonville home, starting right now: sleek, new appliances by Wolf and Subzero from the Westye Group; eye-popping new colors for almost every room (with guidance from Colori's Michelle Quaranta); and a few pieces of well chosen furniture from Haute Living.

<![CDATA[ Green Works! ]]>
After the new walls went up and some old walls came down, we had to think about the finishing touch — paint. I was very skeptical about this stage of green remodeling. I have painted with both high toxicity and low toxicity paints. My experience with the latter, low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) materials had not been the greatest. I like deep tones and bright motivating colors in the work space, and get annoyed when it takes multiple coats to get where I want to go. However, I felt I owed it to the environment, the staff and the office dogs to make an effort on the low VOC front. So, one of my high-efficiency staff, Tim, got a hold of Michelle Quaranta at Colori Paint Boutique, colorichicago.com. Tim managed to chip off enough painted surface from the walls that had the colors we wanted to keep and bring it to Michelle. The old paint, I hate to admit, was what I purchased and used from a large home improvement chain about five or six years ago. It was terrible paint — stinky and it took a lot of coats to get the oranges, yellows and warm nutty colors. When the LoVo paint arrived from Colori, much to my surprise, we got the color we wanted — an exact match — in two coats. The two finishes we used, eggshell and semi-gloss, were exact replicas of the more “commercial” store finishes. The icing on the cake was there was very little odor other than a very feint ammonia-ish smell which went away as soon as the paint dried. It taught me a lesson: there is more paint in a gallon of LoVo paint than in a gallon of run-of the mill home improvement store paint. ]]>

"If you're smart about business, it doesn't matter if you're male or female." Chicago retailer Michelle Quaranta, owner of Colori Chicago, might agree. Quaranta opened her boutique paint store in May 2006 without any preconceived notions about gender bias. It was her first job in the painting industry, and she hit the ground running. Like other survey respondents, Quaranta said she has had to work hard- "but not because of gender," she said. "When I entered the market in 2006, I was building two brands:My store's Colori and (a high-end brand), which I am still building. It's been a challenge to introduce a premium paint product that designers and painters are not at all familiar with." Quaranta believes it's important for young women entering the business to offer customers something other retailers aren't providing, whether that is a product or service. <![CDATA[ Color Trends for 2008 ]]>
Want your next dinner guests to swoon over your Quahog dining room? Your Chipotle kitchen? Your Cocoon foyer? What do all these words mean? They’re the hot new colors for the home in 2008! Creating a more personalized home starts with the colors we splash on the walls. According to Michelle Quaranta-Herzog, local color expert and owner of Colori Paint & Color Boutique, Chicagoans are better embracing vibrant colors, such as reds, oranges and yellows.
The newest and perhaps most en vogue trend is one that, for the most part, avoids color all together, yet can be of the highest sophistication. You guessed correctly if you said --white, the most oft-avoided color for homes. Pairing white hues with a high-contrast color, like black, will give a room a mature and refined look. Paints like C2, the brand Colori carries, are not afraid to push the new white obsession. While expanding the white palette, some have even pushed the color to the top of the fan decks, highlighting them first to customers, according to Quaranta-Herzog. White creates a simple, yet sophisticated environment and gives a crisp and clean feeling to any room that houses the color. Expert pick is one of many popular colors requested at Colori from Michelle Quaranta-Herzog, owner and local color expert. Shown is Cocoon. ]]>

<![CDATA[ Calming Color Combos ]]>
Most spas choose colors such as warm neutrals around which they'll base their decor. Why? "These colors are very restful," explains Michelle Quaranta-Herzog, Chicago's color expert and owner of Colori paint boutique in Bucktown. "Browns are very earthy and make us feel safe while whites are clean, fresh and pure."If earthy isn't your thing, stick with soothing pastels in your spa bathroom. Using primary colors - which can be beautifully vibrant - is much more energizing. Though exciting, this isn't the effect you want in a calming retreat.
Tips & Ideas
-In bathrooms, especially where you apply your makeup, Quaranta-Herzog recommends using colors that complement your skin - flattering yellow-pink-blue undertones. Hold a paint chip next to your face to choose a color that best suits you.

-When painting with different colors, choose similar tones. This will enhance the harmony in the space, whereas too-different colors can have an incoherent - and hence unsettling - effect.

-If you'd like to break away from traditional blue, Quaranta-Herzog likes using wonderfully calm and relaxing green. Not only is it emotionally balancing, but its elements also connect us to nature.

-While red is certainly a hot color, there's a reason you won't see it in spas. Red is the color with the longest wavelength and shortest frequency, so it is very intense and stimulating rather than relaxing. Don't do it. ]]>

The cash register bell rings twice for Michelle Herzog every time she sells a can of C2 brand paint at her new boutique, Colori, in Bucktown. As a shareholder in the company that produces the paint and the owner of the first business to deal exclusively in C2, Herzog aims to build a brick-and-mortar business while increasing her company's stock. The title of shareholder also gives her a shot every year at serving on the committee that names the company's paint varieties. Hot Tamale, James Brown, and Al Green are just a few of the nontraditional monikers the group has assigned its colors. Some of the food and drink aficionados in the company have provided labels such as curry, tiramisu, margarita and blue moon, she said. "They just sit around and drink wine and come up with different color names," she said. Opened in May at 2243 W. North, Colori sports a modern design that combines chemistry lab with artist's studio. Herzog said the boutique is illuminated with special bulbs that simulate daylight common to most people's homes. ]]>

"My appetite has picked up like crazy lately, and now I know why," says Michelle Herzog, owner of Colori. The paint and design boutique will host a party in honor of the color red on February 1, and for the occasion, Herzog has gussied up the store's walls in Diva, Bang!, Lip Service and Vixen--all variants of the shade of honor. "Red stimulates appetite," Herzog explains, "so it's a great color to use in the dining room." Such colorful insights have earned Herzog nicknames like "Color Therapist" and the "Oracle of Color." But before she was crowned with a rainbow of tiaras, Michelle was on a decidedly less eye-catching career path. After accompanying her father to his road-construction sites as a child, Herzog founded her own construction company in 1999. Michelle noticed a gap in the market when she started seeking a color for her bathroom walls: "I must've tried ten different greens," she remembers. "It was so hard to see what the paint would look like based on a sample of printer's lacquer." When a friend introduced her to C2 Collections of Color, a company that offers samples made of real paint, Michelle's color woes were over and the idea for a new business was born. With the aim to "make buying paint fashionable and fun, like shopping for shoes," Michelle opened Colori last May. The store features a light box with halogen, incandescent and fluorescent lights (so customers can see paint in different intensities of light), a paint bar where customers can sip coffee while their order is prepared, and a children's area for the wee patrons. ]]>

It’s the brainchild of Michelle Herzog, a former road construction contractor who had a heck of a time finding/picking paint colors for her home and ended up finding her way into the upscale paint business. “I wanted to make it a more comfortable envionment” and experience, Herzog says of the paint choosing/buying process.
