The FInES Workshop on "Translating Knowledge into Growth: Views from ICT Research to Support Future Business Innovation" is organised on May 9th, 2012 by the European Commission's Future Internet Enterprise Systems (FInES) cluster in collaboration with the European Factories of the Future Association (EFFRA) and Aalborg University.

For more details on the agenda and the speakers or to retrieve the presentations, please follow the links below.

 Agenda & Presentations  Speakers

The event will bring together researchers from EU-funded projects under Challenge 1 of the ICT-FP7 programme, as well as experts and industry representatives from Denmark and other Member States. The Workshop is open to all interested participants and attendance is free of charge (see details below).

This Workshop is part of a sustained effort to strengthen Europe's role in the next generation Internet landscape and reinforce the innovation capacity and competitiveness of European enterprises in the global market, with a particular focus on small and medium-sized enterprises.

The objective of the workshop is to explore and debate several major inter-connected themes which are expected to have a significant impact on the development of next generation enterprise systems, including:

  • (New) business values and characteristics of enterprises
  • From value creation to value innovation
  • Exchange of value objects in next-generation enterprise networks as dynamic constellations of value
  • The enterprise as a complex smart entity capable of sensing and reacting to a wide ranging set of (business) stimuli – the Sensing Enterprise
  • Characteristics, properties and architectures of next-generation enterprise systems
  • Future Internet capabilities, common resources and service utilities to support and power the Universal Business Ecosystem.

The potential impact on business evolution and the enterprise migration path – from the existing situation to the Future Internet – especially for SMEs will be addressed for each workshop theme.

The full day event will start at 9:00 and finish around 17:30, and will comprise three panels referring to business values, value objects and value constellations, the innovative concept of the sensing enterprise, and the next-generation enterprise systems' characteristics, properties and architectural design principles.

The three panels will be followed by an optional one hour session discussing future developments and sustainability of the FInES Cluster addressed mainly – but not exclusively – to the FInES projects' representatives and task forces members.

Panel 1: Business values, value objects and value constellations

This panel takes a fresh look at how Future Internet technologies may enhance the innovation capacity and competitiveness of European enterprises, especially SMEs. The panel focuses on the changing notion of business values, new types of value objects both physical and virtual, and the way in which enterprise resources and capabilities may be deployed in increasingly dynamic value constellations of actors and activities for optimising offerings to customers. The panel describes several examples, discusses the impacts for enterprises, and provides pointers to how enterprises may prepare for digital entrepreneurship in a changing world.

Panel 2: The Sensing Enterprise

What benefits does the Internet of Things bring about for businesses? Are European enterprises in general, and manufacturing enterprises in particular, equipped and ready for the challenges ahead? What does the Sensing Enterprise mean and why is it important?  What are the opportunities, barriers and risks? Who should be tackling them and how? This panel provides a strategic overview of business, technical and governance issues relating to the Sensing Enterprise.

Panel 3: Next-generation Enterprise Systems – characteristics, properties and architectural design principles

Businesses will increasingly operate in a “universal business ecosystem” merging the physical world with the virtual world, where people and things exchange different forms of information and transaction of different types of values. Such an ecosystem will be supported by advanced ICT infrastructures:  from Cloud Computing to SOA and SaaS, from Internet of Things and Smart Objects to Semantic Web and Linked Data, to name just a few among the most relevant ones. This panel discusses the technological trends and developments of next-generation enterprise systems, with a focus on technical design and implementation impacts, in anticipation of future enterprise needs and in support of enterprise migration paths.
