The Mt. Pleasant Youth Activist Network brings together young people ages 14-19 in the Mt. Pleasant community of Cleveland, Ohio to increase access to and knowledge about contraception, including birth control and condoms.

The Campaign

Advocates for Youth and Mt. Pleasant Community Zone, in partnership with The Plain Talk Initiative, have joined together to launch a neighborhood campaign to make sure that teens have the information, skills, and services they need to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy and STDs, including HIV.

The campaign has launched a Youth Activist Network comprised of six young people from Mt. Pleasant who are:

• Educating their peers about healthy relationships, sexual decision making, and how and where to access contraception in their community.
• Creating and disseminating their own educational materials through events such as Pizza Protection Parties.
• Working with local businesses and community-based organizations to ensure that adults take an active role in preventing unwanted teen pregnancy and STDs.
• Promoting the text messaging line which serves as a resource for young people in Mt. Pleasant to find information about sexual health, including STD prevention and birth control and local clinics where they can get help.

Mt. Pleasant Community Zone (MPCZ) is dedicated to working together to build a better, stronger, sustainable community.  To realize its vision of Mt. Pleasant as a healthy, thriving community, MPCZ brings resources together to build on existing community assets and facilitates change as needed. MPCZ works to expand the capacity of community leaders, faith and community based institutions, businesses, schools, and agencies by serving as an information clearinghouse. MPCZ offers programs and funding that strengthen, unify, and build the economic, cultural, educational, and social support systems for residents of Mt. Pleasant. MPCZ also offers community improvement and capacity building activities.
