RECESS

RECESS is not a place and time, it’s a shifting set of contexts. Your parents can’t tell RECESS what to do, but they’re invited. RECESS is dedicated to nurturing emergent, experimental, contemporary practices in a universally accessible environment (well, as much as we can without deluding ourselves into believing in the myth of a “universally accessible environment”). We aim to foster new forms of cultural inquiry and spark a discourse of change within the art community and the community at large.

As arts workers and members of our late-capitalist society, the dusty, solid infrastructure that supports us is marked by a furthering divide between symbolic and actual efforts, between what you want and what you can afford, between the spectacle and its spectator, between me and you. RECESS is composed of young professional curators merging to cultivate their own audience under their own terms to shake the foundations of existing cultural forms. RECESS’ primary members are Brennan Broome, JP Huckins, Chloé Womack, and Tori Abernathy who live and work in Portland, OR.

How to Immigrate to the United States of America is a surreal and dry-humoured series of video works that questions ownership of national and linguistic heritage and our attachments to geography and place. Creating alternate realities through digital video doctoring, special effects, and 3D renderings, the videos walk with the gringo-latino divide that polarizes perceptions, identities and communities in the USA.

Canadian-Irish American, Paul Clay dreams of someday being a Latin Pop Star. Playing with language, sexuality, nationality and 3D worlds, he enjoys remixing realities and people's expectations. Through images and digital multimedia, his work exploits the absurdities and beauty present in our reactionary pop mainstream. He draws heavily from his experiences in and around Hispanic culture and from his reverence of the natural and digital world. He has written and produced several music albums, one entirely in Spanish.

Clay received a Bachelor of Arts in Art from Reed College, Portland, Oregon.
