Scoring and Results

When the physics and clinical components of the Initial Qualifying exams are scored, each question is analyzed by the Psychometrics Division of the ABR. Any questions with unusual statistical results (for example, questions that proved to be extremely difficult and questions that low-scoring candidates answered correctly more frequently than high-scoring candidates) are reviewed by subject matter experts to verify that they are unambiguous and keyed correctly.

The difficulty for each question (the total percentage of examinees answering the question correctly) and the discrimination for each question (how well a question discriminates between the upper and lower groups of examinees in the total exam) are also evaluated.

A statistical analysis of the total examination is prepared and evaluated, using a coefficient factor of reliability that judges the overall quality of the examination. Thus, it is possible to determine the degree of reliability of a given examination and to utilize this information in preparing subsequent examinations.

After the examination is scored, the Board will send you notification of your results, including a quartile ranking in each of the separate categories in the physics and clinical diagnostic radiology exam components.

To assist them in developing their training programs, program directors and chairmen will receive the same information for all candidates from their programs.

In this time period, please do not request scores by e-mail, fax, or any other method. If you have not received your results within six weeks after the exam, you may contact the ABR office . Oral exam results are posted on the candidate's PDB.
