Bill Shankly was born in 1913 into a family of ten in the Ayrshire mining village of Glenbuck. In 1932 he signed for Carlisle United and within a year had signed for Preston North End. A distinguished wing-half, he was capped 7 caps for Scotland.

By the time the chairman of Liverpool – T.V. Williams, appointed him as manager in 1959, Shankly had been in management for over a decade with Carlisle United, Grimsby, Workington and Huddersfield, where he handed a debut to the 16 year old Dennis Law.
Languishing in the old second division and with a crumbling stadium, the challenge facing Shankly was massive. Slowly at first, Shankly and his backroom team turned Liverpool around and the legendary ‘Boot-Room’ was born . The Anfield crowd sensed that things were on the up and gates regularly topped 40,000. Promotion was quickly gained back to the first division.

Shankly knew and understood how the support felt about the game and the pride a successful Liverpool F.C. gave them and always remained in touch with his working class roots.

In the 1965-66 season Liverpool finished as champions, remarkably using a pool of only14 players and they established a passing style that became the envy of Europe. A first European trophy was won in 1973 along with the clubs 8th league title. After the 1974 F.A. cup win against Newcastle United Shankly announced his retirement leaving the club in the more than capable hands of Bob Paisley.

The city of Liverpool was shocked when Bill Shankly died in September 1981 after suffering a heart attack. His spirit lives on at Anfield and he is revered by all Liverpool supporters to this day.
