The annual RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the most famous flower show in the world, was held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the home of the Chelsea pensioners, from May 21st to the 26th 2012. The famous floral marquee is at the heart of the show where exhibitors from all over the UK and the world meticulously display flowers, plants and floral exhibits in return for a coveted and highly regarded RHS medal. Bringing so many plants and flowers to absolute perfection is a highly skilled and nauseating experience for the exhibitors. For example Narcissi and Daffodils that are normally well past their flowering prime are displayed in flawless condition along with later flowering Delphiniums and Lupins. Plants and flowers are held back by refrigeration or bought into premature flowering using Sodium lamps and artificial day length and light. Bougainvillea’s native to Malaysia grown at a Westdale nurseries in Wiltshire, where they have been hybridised and developed at a family run nursery for years, were displayed in full flower in a dazzling array of colours despite the recent cold snap.

The RHS has held flower shows since 1833 and at The Royal Hospital Chelsea since 1933. The show was only cancelled during the first and second world wars and resumed in 1947. The show with its dedicated Royal following has increased in popularity over the years and now operates at maximum capacity drawing in 157,000 visitors annually.

New varieties of plants and flowers are introduced every year and the show gardens and design elements have become very fashionable. Here are a few of our favourite highlights:
