Posted in About the Ashram, Events — 1 CommentApproximately 150 devotees gathered at Yog Sadhan Ashram in West Chicago to honor and celebrate the life of our Satguruji. Below are videos of those who spoke, as well as a special recording of Satguruji chanting with his picture in the background. Let us never forget the great life he lived, all that he gave the world, and his teachings.
In Memory: Shri Satguru Chaman Lal Kapur Ji
Posted in Events — 10 CommentsShri Satguru Chaman Lal Kapur Ji:
March 30th, 1917 – April 22nd, 2012
Our Satguruji left his body on April 22nd at 11:17pm at Yog Sadhan Ashram in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. His compassionate soul selflessly served humanity for the past 95 years by spreading knowledge of complete Yoga throughout the world.
Guruji lived the ideal Yogic life, practicing yoga in its entirety as a family man, college professor and principal, and Guru to hundreds of thousands of people. He obtained extensive knowledge of the Vedas, Bhagavad Gita, and other scriptures through study and research, and published more than two dozen books on Yoga philosophy and practice. These books were written in poetic form and are read by thousands everyday.
Guruji also taught hundreds of thousands of people how to care for their body through Yoga practices. He ensured the Ashram’s doors were open to anyone in need, and through his teachings and blessings he healed many people of severe diseases.
Although Guruji is no longer physically present, he resides permanently in the hearts of hundreds of thousands of devotees across the globe. We bow to his selfless work and are grateful for the knowledge we have received thanks to his devotion. As students of Yog Sadhan Ashram, we wish to carry forward his mission of teaching Yoga to all of humanity.

Pranayama Workshop: March 10th, 2012
Posted in Events, Pranayama — No CommentsPranayama is a Sanskrit word meaning “extension of the prana or breath” or more accurately, “extension of the life force”. The word is composed of two Sanskrit words: “Prāna”, life force or vital energy; and “āyāma”, to extend, draw out, restrain, or control.
Pranayama is the fourth limb of both Hatha Yoga & Raja Yoga, and one of the most critical elements of any yoga students practice. It serves as an important bridge between the outward practices of yoga (like asanas) and the internal practices that lead us into meditation and samadhi. While both the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras describe the practice, it can be difficult to fully understand and apply just by reading.
Learning first hand from a teacher is the best way to learn this subtle yet powerful practice. The goal of this workshop is to leave students with a complete understanding of what Pranayama is, why we should do it, and how we should do it. It is suitable for both beginners and experienced yoga students.

Cultivating a Home Practice: January 7th, 2012
Posted in Events — 2 Comments
Yoga is a systematic practice for achieving a more peaceful life and moving towards self-realization. While attending asana and philosophy classes can be satisfying, cultivating a yoga practice in one’s own home is an integral part to achieving real progress.
At the same time, even serious students find it difficult to make yoga a regular part of their day. We struggle with making time or prioritizing elements of our practice in whatever time we do have.
Yet there are countless examples of students with busy family and work lives that have found a way to integrate yoga into their life. How did they do it? What does it take?
To help us start the new year, the day is dedicated to helping each of us bring yoga to our homes. What asanas should one practice if they have 10 minutes or 1 hour? Is it more important to do cleansings, asanas, pranayama, or meditation if I don’t have time for them all? Is it better to do my practice in the evening or night? Where in my home should I practice? These and many other common questions will be answered in this workshop for both beginners and experienced students striving to make yoga a regular part of their lives.
Schedule:
8:00 – 8:45am: Shatkarmas (Internal Cleansings)
8:45 – 10:00: Asanas & Pranayama
10:00 – 10:15: Break
10:15 – 10:45: The importance of daily practice
10:45– 11:00 Meditation
11:00 – 11:15: Break
11:15 – 12:15pm: How to build a daily practice
12:15 – 1:00: Q&A/Counseling
