Urgent Artist is a blog and community hub
created for/by artists who live by their work.
In conjunction with the A.O. Movement Collective and A.O. PRO(+ductions), Urgent Artist functions as one part of a three-entity family that offers an alternative model for sustainable dancemaking. Founded and currated by Sarah A.O. Rosner, UA is written by a shifting team of contributors with a range of perspectives, preferences, and agendas.
UA’s main goal is to create and sustain a space for an open exchange of ideas and artifacts within (but not limited to) NYC’s downtown dance community. UA realizes that the performance aspect of dancemaking is but one facet of its entire being and substance. We believe that conversations about meanings and intentions, meta-quandaries, artifacts of process and performance, reviews, manifestos, resources, and dialogue are in every way equal parts of dancemaking to performance – they are no less meaningful, interesting, or valuable to us as artists, audience, supporters, and press. This digital space is therefore a home for all non- and sub-visceral aspects of making, presenting, and having made work.
As a part of the three-entity family, UA is home to the meta and sub-viscera of the A.O. Movement Collective, and features the company’s rehearsal videos, meta quandaries, and community interaction. Additionally, UA also functions as the open-source home for A.O. PRO(+ductions)’s resources and templates, encouraging the evolution of a dance community fortified by communal knowledge of both creative and business practices. Urgent Artist is a blog based on the belief that facilitating the open exchange of ideas and dialogue between artists is not only giddily thrilling, but absolutely necessary if we are to continue to evolve as a community.
