Black Diamond SAR was requested by the Emergency Services Coordinator of the City of Norton to assist with the technical evacuation of a subject that had fallen from the Powell Valley Overlook Bridge. Once the subject was recovered, Black Diamond members cleared the scene.

VA-009-12 – Smyth Co

Black Diamond SAR was alerted by the Virginia Emergency Operations Center to respond to a search mission in Smyth Co. for a subject that had been overdue for approximately 4 to 4.5 hours. As SAR personnel were arriving, the Smyth Co SD’s trailing K9, and handler, were successful in their search efforts to bring the subject home.

Black Diamond SAR Council, alongside other Virginia SAR Agencies, was called to respond to Botetourt Co to assist with a search effort for a despondent subject. Search was suspended by local jurisdiction.

Black Diamond, along with other Virginia SAR Agencies, was alerted by the Virginia EOC to respond to Pulaski Co. for a subject missing for several days. Members responded and assisted the jurisdiction with the search effort, until the search was suspended. Follow Up: Subject was located, days later, some distance away – purposefully not returning to the home.

Black Diamond was alerted by Virginia EOC to assist a jurisdiction in Smyth Co. search a cave for a subject which the family had reported missing for several days. Black Diamond members searched the cave without incident and reported this back to the jurisdiction.

Black Diamond was alerted by the Virginia EOC to respond to Washington Co, per the request of the jurisdiction to assist in locating an overdue ATV rider. Subject was located by local fire department and Black Diamond members stood by to assist if needed.

VA-077-11 – Floyd County, VA

On 11/20/2011 Black Diamond was alerted by the VA EOC to respond to Floyd County, VA for a missing child with Down Syndrome and who was not familiar with the area. The child was located a short time later about 4 miles from where he was last seen. All Black Diamond units cleared and returned home.

On October 25th, 2011 Black Diamond received a request by the VA EOC to respond to a search in Doswell, Virginia (Near Kings Dominion) for a missing 8 year old autistic child. About 6,000 volunteers played some role in the search, along with about 300 professional searchers. The child was located days later and flown by helicopter to a local hospital.

Black Diamond was called to Hungry Mother State Park to assist Marion Lifesaving Crew with a 69 year old female that had fallen some distance off one of the trails into a drainage. Black Diamond assisted in the technical portion of the evac, cleared and returned home.
