Slips of the Tongue, out now.

Featuring

Katie Powderly, Josh Oliver, Andrew Harrison, Tom Pryor, Jon Vriesacker, Nick Mader, Ben Wolf, Brian Knapp, Bryn Davies, Jill Andrews.

Slips of the Tongue was recorded primarily by Mike Zirkel (2011 Best Studio Sound Engineer, Madison Area Music Awards) at Smart Studios in Madison, WI. Owned by Butch Vig of Garbage, who, notably just produced the Foo Fighters' 2012 Grammy award-winning album Wasting Light, Smart is best known as where Nirvana recorded parts of Nevermind and Smashing Pumpkins recorded Gish.

In order to achieve the specific sound she was going for, Katie enlisted the help of an all-star cast of musicians from her home state of Wisconsin as well as several of East Tennessee's best known Americana artists, including bassist Bryn Davies, who currently tours with Jack White after a long stint with up and comer Justin Townes Earle, but who has also recorded with such luminaries as Guy Clark, Tony Rice Unit, Patty Griffin, and others, and appeared on Saturday Night Live, as well as David Letterman. Jill Andrews, Josh Oliver, and Tom Pryor form the rest of the Tennessee contingent, names you might recognize as members of the former everybodyfields. Tom is currently a member of the Black Lillies, and has made more than a handful of appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and CMT.

The Tennessee portions of her album were recorded at Elgang Studios in Knoxville, which is the recording studio of Scott Minor, former drummer of the now defunct Sparklehorse. The fact that such talented folks enthusiastically climbed on board to participate in her debut album is a testament to the fact that her singing and songwriting are really something special.

In her short musical career, Katie has shared bills with Tony Rice, Del McCoury Band, Yonder Mountain String Band, Langhorne Slim, Jill Andrews, Grammy-nominated David Mayfield Parade, and many others. Her singing and harmonies have been likened to Gillian Welch (Isthmus, Madison, WI) and Gram Parsons (City Paper, Rochester, NY.) Her forthcoming album, however, marks a shift in genre for Powderly, deepening her sound from simple folk music to something described as hauntingly beautiful (Isthmus, Madison, WI) and David Lynch-y (Flying Rooster, Chapel Hill, NC) exceptional enough in quality to establish her as "one of Madison's most promising musical talents" (Isthmus, Madison, WI.)

With the release of her debut full-length album out on her indie label, Red-Winged Blackbird Records, LLC, Katie sold all of her belongings and is moving into an RV, in which she will travel all 50 states in a tour entitled "From Sea to Shining Sea,"  which kicked off in April 2012 in Knoxville, TN, at the Rhythm N' Blooms festival.

It is an unconventional approach to touring on an album, but Powderly insists that the only thing capable of quelling the restlessness and yearning inside of her is at the end of a vast expanse of pavement.

"I want to combine my love of playing music with my search for America. I love our country and want to take the time to see it, to get to know it."  So when she comes to your town, be sure not to miss her.  You never know if she’ll be coming back this way again.
