Lost - or rebuilding your Vinyl Records collection? ...

.... You know many of my friends tell me they wish they hadn't sold their Vinyl Records collection, that each album or 45 held a fond memory - but other things got in the way - such as the kids coming along. There just wasn't the room or time to care for vinyl records, so - out they went.

However these days there is an unmistakable up-serge in the popularity of albums and record players - (or turntables as they are now called!) and, if you dream of rebuilding your record collection, I am going to provide you with the opportunity to do some thing about it!

On this site you will find information on all and anything to do with records. How to care for vinyl records - how do you appraise an album - current values of albums and singles - where to buy LPs and 45s - which record shops offer the best value - where to buy audio equipment such as turntables, amplifiers and loudspeakers - reviews of recommended acoustic equipment - what goes best with what - which cartridge matches which record player - what amplifier not to link up with those speakers.

You know the sort of thing!!

I think the site would not be complete without a look at some of the milestones in audio equipment.

Some people would argue a number of the classic valve amplifiers sound better than today’s offerings.

So a section on some of the important amplifiers of the time together with turntables and speaker design play an important role in this site.

My own love of albums goes back to Christmas 1961, when my brother Robert bought our dad a vinyl recording of Beethoven's violin concerto. Yehudi Menuhin was the soloist and the orchestra - the Vienna Philharmonic.

As an early pressing, it was still mono, on the 'His Masters Voice' label. I still have that recording; it's in (almost) mint condition and is one of my most prized possessions.

I have to say dad was a lover of 78s at the time, telling Robert these new vinyl records would never catch on!! But he changed his view, collecting many fine classical recordings over the next few years.

Today, I am the keeper of his collection - all still (almost) mint, as he guided me on the care of vinyl records. During the years I have added my own taste to the collection; it now ranges from Amadeus Mozart to Led Zeppelin!

I think it would be great if we can build a discography of all the best classical music, Big band music, Swing, Jaz, County & Western, Rock-n-Roll, Pop and Rock music, in fact - all the best of the classical, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.

To do this I invite you to send me details of your favourite music/band - let's say your favourite three tracks for each artist; with short story about each piece.

I will then add it to the discography, together with a potted history of the musician/band.

The only stipulation I would ask is that the original recording should have been on vinyl. Have a look at some of the favourites added so far - I hope it inspires!

All in all, I hope you find 'Vinyl Records Still Live' an exciting place to visit - an ongoing source of information on all matters records - that it will inspire you to build on your own record collection and you will continue to visit the site and participate in it’s growth!

Thanks for your visit!

David Schofield.
