Growing Pains

Growth of a business is definitely a good problem to have but it’s a problem nonetheless.

I have heard people mention about growing pains. I have seen them lose appetite and sleep over it. Yet I could never understand why growth would be such a pain for many. Well, now that I am the one experiencing it I can first hand tell you that it is absolutely painful.

I founded the business in April of 2011 and since then we have come a long way. We have been fortunate enough to have some big name brands as our clients and the list keeps growing. As we grow, I find myself weighed down in responsibilities that I never knew existed. One of the key things to do when a business is growing is to let go a little and I am trying but it’s hard to let someone else raise your baby. However, when the baby is too big to sit on your lap, you have to push it out a little.

To those who are experiencing growing pains, the only suggestion I can give is try not to be hands on with everything. Find a few key people that you trust and let them roll with it. Just like raising a kid, you have got take a backseat sometimes and watch how it all pans out without always telling them how to do things.

In my experience, the solution to growing pains is to invest in good people. People you can trust. Guide them a little and let them do their thing so you can focus on growing without ever having to experience the pain again.

Achieving Goals

Goals should motivate us. Having goals means we have motivation to do something. However, many of us focus so much on what we are doing to achieve that goal, it impacts us negatively. We think about things we are giving up, all the work we are putting in, etc. But, if we focus only on the goal itself and not the path we are taking to achieve that goal, it will be a lot easier.

Learn to look at the end of the tunnel where the light is shining and not the dark path you are taking to get to that light.

Stay positive. You’ll get there.

Avoid “The Sheldon Complex”

I am addicted to Big Bang Theory. 4 nerdy guys and a pretty girl definitely makes for good humor.

Anyway, the other day i started thinking about Dr. Sheldon Cooper. The guy is a whack job. Funny, but a whack job.

Thinking that you are better than everyone else doesn’t prove anything. Feeling you are smarter that everyone doesn’t say a thing about you. You may very well be smart and better than everyone but if you can’t make something out of it, you are going to turn into Sheldon Cooper – an annoying, self centered man who gets laughed at.

Avoid the Sheldon complex. Prove what you are, don’t tell.

Diving Into Programming: RubyOnRails

Most of us have ideas that never see the day of light. I am one of them. Over the years, I have come up with many ideas and some of them never come to life since it requires programming.

Usually when I have an idea, I like to sit on it for a couple months to see if I would still be as pumped about it. Towards the end of last year, I came up with two ideas. I am passionate about both of them but one of them I just can’t seem to get out of my head. I thought of hiring a programmer to create it but at this point I want to have complete control over how this particular app will work. I think communicating to someone else might be a pain.

After doing research, it seems like RubyOnRails is the way to go. The books are bought, software installed and I am ready to dive into it. The goal is to have a working prototype within one year. We will see how it goes.

This application will enable kids to learn among themselves. I will share more details once I get comfortable with the programming a bit. I am sure I will need help along the line from others but at this point, I am diving in. I have been dreaming this for a while now and it’s time to kill it.

Entrepreneurs Should Be Dream Killers

If a dream stays a dream it’s nothing more than a dream. A dream should be a reality no matter how hard and impossible it sounds (depending on how logical your dream really is. If you want to grow cash on trees, that might stay a dream). In order to make it a reality, you need to

  1. Dream.
  2. Kill the dream by acting on it.
  3. Make it a reality.

Simple as that. Be a dreamer first, then a dream slayer.

Being a Nobody Is The Best Opportunity In Itself to Be Somebody

When you are a nobody

  1. no one expects much out of you.
  2. you are under the radar.
  3. your mistakes go unnoticed.
  4. no one expects you to prove yourself.
  5. you don’t have to worry about your reputation

Basically, you can keep making mistakes until you get it right. Being able to make mistakes without having to worry about consequences sounds pretty damn good, doesn’t it?
