Film Independent, which produces the Los Angeles Film Festival and the Spirit Awards, has announced the jury and audience prize winners for this year’s edition of LAFF. Jon Heder and Ari Graynor hosted the awards presentation, held for the third year at CHAYA Downtown. This year’s festival ran from June 14 to June 24 and was presented by the Los Angeles Times.

The 2012 edition of the Cannes Film Festival has come to a close, and the winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or is Michael Haneke, who has a long association with the festival. Besides his win this year for “Amour” (“Love”) he has been awarded the Palme d’Or in 2009 for “Das Weisse Band” (“The White Ribbon”), Best Director in 2005 for “Cache” (“Hidden”), and the Grand Prix for “La Pianiste” in 2001. The first film which Haneke screened at Cannes was 1989’s “Der 7 Kontinent.”
American filmmaker Wes Anderson, whose movie “Moonrise Kingdom” is the first film to be screened in Competition, opened up the 65th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, with his filmmaking team by his side.

The Heineken Audience Award Winners have been announced for the 2012 edition of the Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), with “Any Day Now,” directed by Travis Fine, winning in the Narrative category and “BURN,” directed by Tom Putnam and Brenna Sanchez taking home the prize in the documentary category.
It has been announced that the world premiere of “Shanghai Calling” will close out the Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF), which runs April 28 through May 3. The film, written and directed by Daniel Hsia, stars Daniel Henney (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”), Eliza Coupe (“Scrubs,” “Happy Endings”), Bill Paxton, and Alan Ruck.
The third annual SOHO International Film Festival begins this weekend, with one of the highlights of the event being a Q and A session with veteran actor--and noted New York icon--Danny Aiello on April 19. Aiello, whose acting career spans some five decades, is known for his roles in "Do the Right Thing" (for which he was nominated for an Academy Award), "Moonstruck," "Once Upon a Time in America," and "The Godfather Part II." The interview will be conducted by John Gallagher, whose own iconic indie movie, "The Deli," will close out the festival.

The third year of the digital initiative allows domestic audiences to view select feature and short films for free, including four world-premiere features to be streamed just after their TFF theatrical premieres.

As has become expected, the awards handed out at SXSW, which wrapped up March 18, went beyond the usual competition fare found at most festivals. The Tribeca Film Festival (TFF) and Universal Pictures have announced that “The Five-Year Engagement” will open the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival. Director/writer/producer Nicholas Stoller and writer/star Jason Segel of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” re-team for the irreverent comedy, which also stars Emily Blunt, Rhys Ifans, Chris Pratt and Alison Brie. The premiere will take place on Wednesday, April 18, and the festival will run through April 29.
SWSX, Austin’s Southwest Film Conference and Festival that reared its tiny head less than two decades ago only to become one of the giants in the industry, announced its line-up on February 1st with the coveted “Centerpiece” slot going to the world premiere of Columbia and MGM’s “21 Jump Street.” Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, this action-comedy stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as the iconic young cops who return to high school to solve crime.
While it was Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” which took home some early Oscar hardware for Best Cinematography (Robert Richardson) and Best Art Direction (Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schavo), it was “The Artist” which ultimately walked away with three of the four biggest prizes, winning Best Picture, Best Director for Michel Hazanavicius, and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin at the 84th annual Academy Awards. This year’s telecast was hosted by Billy Crystal.
With “The Artist,” “The Descendants,” and “My Week with Marilyn” all taking home major prizes at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, it might seem that the Oscars may be a bit anti-climactic.
The winners have been announced for the 62nd annual Berlin International Film Festival, which wrapped up February 19, with “Cesare deve morire” (“Caesar Must Die”), by Paolo & Vittorio Taviani, taking home the prestigious Golden Bear for Best Film.
