Youngsters from across the region will enjoy their own mini-Paralympics this Friday at the Greater Manchester Disability Games. Organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Sports Development Unit, and held at Leigh Sports Village, more than 200 disabled athletes from Bolton, Oldham, Rochdale, Wigan, Tameside and Stockport will compete for a chance to be named the best borough in the region.
Local musicians will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in the largest closing cultural event of London 2012 on 9th September thanks to Wigan Leisure Culture Trust. Musical performances held in Mesnes Park, Wigan will be one of hundreds of outdoor, community concerts taking place simultaneously across the country, making up the Bandstand Marathon.
The next exhibition at Leigh’s Turnpike Gallery will be simply “beastly”! Opening on Saturday 30 June “Beastly Machines” by Johnny White will not only give visitors a chance to see his amazing creations but also a chance to make their own with family drop-in activities between 11am and 2.30pm.
More than 500 nine to 11-year-olds took part in a host of events including athletics, tag rugby, football and volleyball at Leigh Sports Village on Thursday. Watched and supported by some of the borough’s most talented athletes, children were encouraged to work as a team with the focus of the event about encouraging participation rather than winning.
Businesses across the borough have once again “trumpeted” the importance of the town’s jazz festival. With the current national economic gloom showing no signs of lifting, many businesses are struggling. But in Wigan they certainly haven’t cut back when it comes to supporting the International Jazz Festival.
