Oyster Cards

The cheapest way to get around London on public transport is by using an Oyster Card. If you don’t have one, you can get a Visitor Oyster Card (2-4 days delivery) delivered before you arrive or buy an Oyster Card when you arrive. Oyster Cards never expire, so they can be used on future trips to London. An Oyster Card has a lower single fare cost than cash and will always find the lowest possible fare combination for your day’s travel, and will usually pay for itself within a couple of days.

Travel Cards

Alternatively, the following Travelcards (and other tickets) are available, which may be more suited to delegates attending a single day:

Day Travelcard (Zones 1-2) £5.60 (off peak) £7.20 (anytime)
7 Day Travelcard (Zones 1-2) £25.80 (anytime)

It is generally cheaper to buy a Travelcard than to pay for single journeys unless you intend on only making one journey in a day, since a single cash fare for a Zones 1-2 single ticket is £4.

If you have an Oyster Card, this fare will be substantially cheaper and your daily travel cost will automatically be capped at the cost of a Travelcard.

Accommodation

Unfortunately we have no free complimentary accommodation this year spacer .

Cheap accommodation is available however at the London Hostel Palmer’s Lodge (only a tube stop away from the venue and the same hostel used by many delegates in previous Dev8Ds). It is basic hostel accommodation which you may share with other participants, the cost is around £20 per night. We know that your booking usually includes breakfast. Check in is from 2pm and luggage storage is available if you arrive earlier. Check out is 11am on the day of departure. You are welcome to use the restaurant/kitchen facilities, which contains a microwave, kettles, toasters, sandwich press, crockery, cutlery, however there is no oven. There is free wireless though it does not reach in all rooms. A map is available here.

Hotels in the Area

Our apologies in advance to any of you are not able to book into this cheap place (book early!). There are more than enough hotels in the Bloomsbury area, jut search for places near the ‘British Museum’ or ‘British Library’ which will all put you within walking distance of the University of London Union.

We recommend you book your accommodation early as you are more likely to be able to get a really good price.
