Happy Birthday Dad!

spacer

SURPRISE!

We hadn’t originally planned to get home for July 2nd but decided it would be fun to surprise my dad on his birthday.  When he found out we were heading north but not going to make it for his day he was not a happy camper, or so my mother told me.  So I called my mum and told her to keep it a secret.  Now if you know my mother, this is not something that comes easily to her.  But to her credit, she succeeded.

Once I decided to be there, I got my sisters to join in and on July 2nd we all appeared at the farm (my parent’s live on 152 acres outside of Toronto).  Yes it’s a farm but it’s also got a tennis court and a swimming pool, so it’s also like a cottage too :)  The girls love it.

My father loves my sugar cookies, so I decided to make him some and decorate them like his other love…golf!

I used the scorecard from a golf course I found online as inspiration.  I only made nine holes and then threw in some other fun cookies to make up the dozen.  Rowan decorated a few cookies for him too with the left over icing.

Our surprise was a great success, he totally was blown away!

Happy Birthday dad, we love you!

Last week in cookies…

No insights today, just a flurry of cookies I made for three special people.

First up is birthday cookies for our Rowan’s little friend, Sophia.  Happy Birthday sweety!

Next up is for our new neighbours Jane and Tom, as a welcome gift.  Thanks Bridget from Bake at 350 for the picket fence idea.  The house is designed to look like their house.

And lastly, for our sweet neighbour behind us, Miss Hazel, who always comes to say hello to the girls and gives them cookies.  So in return…

Chocolate Brownie Fudge Bar with Chocolate Ganache

I have a confession…I love to host dinner parties.  So when Rob bought his birthday present, a new smoker, it was another great reason to have a few friends (or twenty) over to test it out!  I try to say we’ll do the main and everyone else bring sides potluck style but I just can’t stop myself.  You just never know, someone may forget, so I may over prepare.

This past weekend was no exception.  I had hummus with carrots and pistachio's for appys, watermelon skewers with a balsamic reduction and watermelon stars on sticks for the kids as a fresh side and of course we did four racks of ribs and a 10lb pork shoulder as the main. (sorry no pics)

Now you’re probably thinking, ok let’s hear about this fudge bar you teased us with in the post title.  ok ok!

I also believe that every good meal should have an equally good dessert and so do our guests.  When they saw the watermelon they immediately asked where the fattening alternative was.  They know me so well.

So I made this…

It’s a brownie layer covered by a fudge layer and then covered in a chocolate ganache coating.  Can I get a yes please??????  oh me please.  After I cut out the pieces for the pictures, I of course had to give it a taste test.  WELL…

I immediately texted Rob and told him he’d been replaced :)  LOL
