Marsha L. Heinke, DVM, EA, CPA, CVPM

First in heart, Marsha L Heinke, DVM, EA, CPA, CVPM is a doctor of veterinary medicine, but her head led to a career serving her colleagues as a consultant and accountant, by gaining additional education and credentials as an Enrolled Agent, a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager.

Since July 1, 2003, Dr. Heinke has dedicated her time and energy to the veterinary profession through her accounting and consulting practice, Marsha L. Heinke, CPA, Inc. The firm serves veterinarians, veterinary practice managers, practices, and industry supporting the veterinary profession.

Dr. Heinke’s firm services include business consulting, valuation, planning, taxation, accounting, bookkeeping systems, internal control reviews and onsite reviews, strategic planning, and group facilitation, among others, with an emphasis on integrity, common sense, client service, and quality work product.

Besides veterinary conference speaking and study group facilitation, Marsha shares knowledge and advice through her articles, extensively featured in various trade publications, including DVM Newsmagazine, AAHA Trends, and Equine Veterinary Management.

Dr. Heinke is lead author of Practice Made Perfect, a completely revised third edition of Dr. John B. McCarthy’s acclaimed Basic Guide to Veterinary Hospital Management., published by AAHA Press. She is author of the Chart of Accounts for Equine Veterinary Practices, available through the American Association of Equine Practitioners. She has co-authored and authored chapter contributions to Veterinary Clinics of North America and The 5-Minute Veterinary Practice Management Consult.

In 2007, Marsha and her team launched the 1-Resource, Inc. Dare to Care Program to help veterinary practices improve profitability, reduce avoidable losses, and enhance employee loyalty through HR support.

A 1979 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Marsha Heinke was a full time mixed animal practitioner for 14 years, with special interests in companion animals and horses.

In 1990, Dr. Heinke passed the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Federal Enrolled Agent’s exam (EA). In 1992 she completed all licensing requirements for Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and certification requirements for designation as a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM).

Before beginning her own company in 2003, Dr. Heinke was employed for thirteen years as a full time consultant and accountant with Owen E. McCafferty, CPA, Inc., renown as a pioneering firm in veterinary practice valuation, tax and other services for the veterinary profession.

Marsha and her husband, Dr. Larry Forthofer, enjoy their Labradors, cats and horses on their Ohio farm, and are co-owners of an upscale pet resort.

An avid surgeon at heart, Dr. Heinke makes excursions to the Dominican Republic (Project Samana) and Mexico (Amigos de los Animales) to participate in animal sterilization campaigns and vet student mentorship.
