Humanitas Visiting Professorship in Economic Thought
Partha Dasgupta
8 - 10 May 2012
University of Oxford
Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta served as Inaugural Humanitas Visiting Professor in Economic Thought at the University of Oxford.
In his opening lecture, entitled Time and the Generations Professor Dasgupta gave an overview of the process by which we assess economic performance and prescribe policy remedies. He then elaborated on the analytics of each step and the history of the development of methods, focusing on the issue of sustaining human well-being across the generations. His lecture excellently set the stage for the following workshops and seminars, where Professor Dasgupta gave a much more detailed view of the analytics of assessing economic performance and prescribing remedies for the more specialised audience (mostly economics and philosophy graduate students and faculty).
The programme for the Inaugural Humanitas Visiting Professorship in Economic Thought also included two masterclasses by other prominent experts, as part of a concluding symposium: Professor Sir Robert Watson (Professor of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia) and Professor John Broome (White’s Professor of Moral Philosophy, University of Oxford). Professor Watson’s masterclass focused on UK government climate-change policy -for which his work as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs uniquely qualifies him- as a concrete implementation of the assessment and prescription process set out by Professor Dasgupta. Professor Broome’s masterclass provided additional focus from the philosophical side; he highlighted key differences between how philosophers and economists think about welfare judgments.
