Legal Research

Orientation to Legal Research and the Use of Law Library Collections is designed to give a basic introduction to legal sources and research techniques.  This class provides an overview of statutes, regulations, and court cases and the relationships among them.  The Law Library's resources for locating these items in print and automated formats are presented.  These orientations, taught by reference librarians, are taught bimonthly.  To register, sign up in person in the Law Library Reading Room (LM 201), call (202) 707-9801, or complete the online registration form below.  Prior to attending a class, you need to obtain a Library of Congress Registration Card.

Legal Research for Embassy Personnel

Legal Research Orientation for Embassy Personnel is designed to include approaches to legal research on United States federal law. Attendees will be shown how to access laws, administrative regulations, court cases, treaties, and a host of other print and electronic sources and databases. These orientations, taught by reference librarians, are offered every three months. To register, sign up in person in the Law Library Reading Room (LM 201), call (202) 707-3812, or complete the online registration form below.

THOMAS

The THOMAS Orientation is designed to give a basic overview of the THOMAS website through lecture and hands-on exercises. Searching legislation, public laws or bills, and the congressional documents that pertain to the legislative process is the primary focus of the session. Specialized areas of the website, like the legislative process and status of appropriations, will be reviewed. The orientations taught by reference librarians are offered bimonthly. To register, sign up in person in the Law Library Reading Room (LM201), call (202) 707-9801, or complete the Seminar Form. Prior to attending a class, you need to obtain a Library of Congress Registration Card.
