Macho Prince of Letters Norman Mailer died | 12.11.2007 |
Norman Mailer, the macho prince of American letters who for decades reigned as the country's literary conscience and provocateur, died of renal failure early Saturday, his literary executor said. He was 84.
From his classic debut novel, "The Naked and the Dead," to such masterworks of literary journalism as "The Armies of the Night," the two-time Pulitzer Prize winner always got credit for insight, passion and originality.
Some of Mailer's works were highly praised, some panned, but none was pronounced the Great American Novel that seemed to be his life quest from the time he soared to the top as a brash 25-year-old "enfant terrible."
Despite heart surgery, hearing loss and arthritic knees that forced him to walk with canes, Mailer retained his enthusiasm for writing and in early 2007 released "The Castle in the Forest," a novel about Hitler's early years, narrated by an underling of Satan. Also, a book of conversations about the cosmos, "On God," came out in the fall. Both, highly recommended reads.
As being a cultural rebel for such a long time, Norman Mailer will be greatly missed. RIP.

Canada: Police will tolerate music piracy | 12.11.2007 |

"Piracy for personal use is no longer targeted. It is too easy to copy these days and we do not know how to stop it. "
On the heels of the forced shutdown of popular torrent trackers Demonoid and OiNK, and the U.S. government's re-introduction of the PIRATE Act, which would force the Department of Justice to bring suits against individual file-sharers, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have announced that they no longer plan on prosecuting people who download copyrighted songs for their own personal use.
Of course, copyright infringement remains a civil offense, and so organizations like the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) is still able to bring suits against individuals.

Reunited Avengers, Pansy Division Join Forces for | 11.11.2007 |
Punk rock nostalgia hounds will get a double dose of the stuff they crave this fall in the form of a co-headlining tour featuring the Avengers and Pansy Division.
For those who need their memories jogged, the Avengers are a short-lived San Francisco foursome who reunited half-intact this year, 30 years after they first formed. Frontwoman Penelope Houston and guitarist Greg Ingraham remain from the original lineup, and this will be the band's very first national tour.
Pansy Division have only been gone a short time by comparison: four years. Also from San Francisco, the former Lookout! "queercore" band is now signed to Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles and is readying its next full-length. Here's hoping for an LP full of songs as provocatively titled as past classics ("Dick of Death", "He Whipped My Ass in Tennis (Then I Fucked His Ass in Bed)", etc.).
The Avengers and Pansy Division now share DNA in the form of the Mr. T Experience/the Plus Ones' Joel Reader (bass in the former, guitar in the latter) and the Plus Ones' Luis Illades (drums). The joint tour kicks off in L.A. tomorrow night (October 11), but the Avengers have a single date without Pansy Division tonight in their hometown.

Radiohead OR name your price for music? | 11.11.2007 |
The widely reported story that Radiohead fans opted to pay nothing or nearly nothing has been debunked by the bank themselves. As in the original story, the numbers were drawn from a report by comScore, and reported by The Associated Press.
The band made the following statement:
"In response to purely speculative figures announced in the press regarding the number of downloads and the price paid for the album, the group’s representatives would like to remind people that… it is impossible for outside organisations to have accurate figures on sales. "
However, they can confirm that the figures quoted by the company comScore Inc are wholly inaccurate and in no way reflect definitive market intelligence or, indeed, the true success of the project.
However, the band has declined to publish any official numbers making it very difficult to make any sort of assertion about the future of the donation-sales method.
