It shows it's geeky roots that you are expected to walk over to the keyboard to press keys to control the video when watching it on your big screen TV. Other rough edges still exist like not remembering the aspect ratio of your TV from session to session, the window closing when the file is finished and the player not waiting until the first frame is rendered are still quite distracting. Once the rendering stabilizes though, this player renders a larger variety of formats better than any other player. luvgeek freecode.com/users/luvgeek tag:freecode.com,2005:Comment/47757 2008-11-25T22:44:14Z 2009-03-14T22:53:37Z I love to stream from News Groups Baby!! I give VLC a rating of and 8 as opposed to a 10 for one main reason. Whenever I try to copy video files into certain formats (usually wmv), VLC will "encounter an error, and be forced to close". VLC installs perfectly with the synaptic installer tool. The tool is somewhat less complex than its main competitor "mplayer" under Lunix. To some this may be considered as a Con as Mplayers complexity allows more configuration possibilities. However i find the simplistic interface by VLC a mayor plus. With Mplayer I had to manually change audio settings in order to get sound and image synchronised and even than it was far from perfect. VLC does the job right out of the box. Good performance, even on my slow box. Very top rate software. Some quicktime files play without sound for some reason I haven't been able to figure out yet, and there is no real media codec as there is with mplayer, but otherwise, this is as good as it gets! strannik2 freecode.com/users/strannik2 tag:freecode.com,2005:Comment/37805 2005-11-19T13:58:30Z 2009-03-14T22:53:28Z VLC Rocks This is a really versatile system. I really like the ability to read many formats without having to install all the usual plugins. And it work well with streaming. Good job. By default, the powerbook DVD drives are region locked. You can only change the region five times, and then it stays locked. By watching the DVD's with VLC you can do it region free, and not consume the five change -limit built into the OS. This has helped me a great time. Most of the time, I would not be able to to watch it because the only program I had was Windows Media Player which I now know that is practically useless as far as everything. So know thanks to this program I can play practically any type of media file no matter what its format is. carlosc1dbz freecode.com/users/carlosc1dbz tag:freecode.com,2005:Comment/35899 2005-06-26T09:27:27Z 2009-03-14T22:53:26Z Great for Streaming This is the only player I've found that can handle streaming video from my ReplayTV. Windows XP doesn't play DVDs by default. Most solutions cost $10-20 , which is too much to pay for basic functionality that should have come with Windows in the first place, especially when I'm talking about an entire office. VideoLAN installs and plays DVDs and a bunch of other video formats right away. Simple to use, works well. It's much better then the pirated media players that most people use. What more could you ask for? That is very useful. One small thing: It would be nice if there would be a modus where the player can be switched to no-frame display in window mode, that is the only thing visible being the picture itself, no progress bar or header bar or whatever. Just the picture. cherub96 freecode.com/users/cherub96 tag:freecode.com,2005:Comment/33914 2005-01-22T08:46:06Z 2009-03-14T22:53:23Z videolan player Just downloaded it to be able to play MPeg 2 files looks great certainly use it in preference to wmp thanks very much. maliki freecode.com/users/a2fus tag:freecode.com,2005:Comment/33453 2004-12-14T11:03:32Z
