I would've never thought

marcdw (Homepage) - July 5, 2012 - 1:26am

YES! I make heavy use of text-mode browsers on my *nix machines and
do have lynx and Links on one of the XP machines but I never thought I'd
see a portable apps version of these browsers.
Useful for those times when I just need see some info quickly.

Thanks and kudos to all involved.

Woohoo! (can you tell I'm a happy camper?)

Thanks! But no sites load, colon is appended to all URLs

jxf11 - July 5, 2012 - 9:44am

Thanks for this app, I'm a big Lynx fan from way back.

But after installing LinksPortable_2.7.paf.exe and running LinksPortable.exe, I get a blank window, I hit G, get the "Go to URL" pop-up and enter www.google.com or www.google.com.

Then I get:
- Looking up host
- Error loading www.google.com: Host not found
- note the extra colon at the end of the url

This happens if I try to load the PortableApps.com entry in the Bookmarks manager - a colon is appended to the end of the URL and it errors on host not found.

Am I goofing up in the use of the app somehow? Thanks in advance, jxf011

I've found links a bit buggy in my testing. If you hit ESC does the menu come up? If not, it might be a Cygwin incompatibility if you have it installed locally (or any piece of it from other apps).

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Can Lynx be made a PortableApp?

jxf11 - July 5, 2012 - 11:33am

When I launch Links, the initial screen is blank. Then G brings up the go to pop up and ESC brings the menu. I used ESC to get to the Bookmarks. Cygwin is part of a few portable apps but I don't have it installed as a stand alone and Cygwin isn't in any of my system or user variables.

I checked and the latest version of the Lynx text web browser is lynx2.8.8dev.12 and you can get the Win32 versions at Lynx Win32 Installers

I tried "Release built with curses (color-style)" and it works great out of the gate. The program runs off localized text config files but the installer creates uninstall registry keys.

Could Lynx be made into a PortableApp?

It's indeed incredibly fast. And worked well for the 5 minutes or so that I was using it. My worst comment is that the Facebook site sucked, but I didn't expect it to work anyway.

I'm finding that the less stuff I do, the less stuff I wanna do.
