UAlbany Mail Outlook Web App Prompting for Information
UAlbany Mail is part of Microsoft’s Live@edu mail service.  You may have noticed when you log on, that Microsoft has recently been requesting Outlook Web App (OWA) users to provide some additional information (phone number, alternate email, etc).  Their harmless intention is to have some means of verifying your identity if you forget your password, very similar to practices used by Gmail, Yahoo, Facebook, etc.  Unlike some Live@edu schools, we chose not to involve Microsoft in the process to reset your password.  So, while Microsoft is proactively trying to make a password reset easier for you, the information they are collecting cannot be used for this purpose in our case.  If you forget your password, you still need to visit the password reset page on the MyUAlbany site, as always.  If you provide at least one piece of the requested information,  you will not be prompted again.  For example, you may wish to enter (555) 555-5555 as a phone number in order to meet their requirement and click Save.

Blackboard CE8 Retires August 1, 2012
On August 1, 2012, the Blackboard CE8 system will be retired. Please complete all necessary coursework, data archives, grade reviews and any other work which requires access to a course hosted on the CE8 system prior to this date.

Increased Phishing Activity
As a result of the exposure of subscribers’ email accounts and passwords, LinkedIn users can expect to see an increase in phishing messages purporting to come from LinkedIn, and other on-line providers referenced in subscribers’ profiles,  asking for password confirmations or account updates. LinkedIn has stated that any correspondence with subscribers regarding the breach will NOT contain hyperlinks in the text of the message. As usual, unsolicited email requests for passwords or account information should always be treated as highly suspect.

Think that email might be a hoax? You could be right, and it's wise to be suspicious. Cyber criminals are out there 'phishing' for people who will be fooled by bogus messages. Don't be one of them! The University at Albany will never ask for your password. You can safely delete any messages asking for personal or login information, even if they claim to come from a UAlbany office. In fact, you should exercise caution whenever anyone asks for any of your personal information via email.

For examples, check our Catch of the Day where we regularly post phony messages received by members of the campus community. If you'd like to report a suspected phish, please email the Information Security Office (Martin Manjak at mmanjak@.albany.edu, or Larry Parker at lparker@albany.edu) or the Office of the CIO at cio@albany.edu.

Information Technology Services is the centralized technology provider to the University community in support of its teaching, research and service objectives. Under the direction of the Chief Information Officer, the organization is highly collaborative and fosters active participation from across the campus. Open planning processes, flexibility and working closely with other campus units invites communication, creative solutions and partnerships that help shape the evolving needs of a dynamic academic environment.
