Remember those jam jars your grandmother used to hoard in the basement? The ones she’d pull out every fall and fill to the brim with sticky preserves and sweet jams? Well, these are—and are not—your grandma’s jam jars. Using a variety of Mason jar sizes, designer Sarah Pease has developed the “audioJar,” an answer to the challenge issued by MIT PhD candidate David Mellis, whose thesis project includes a new way for music fans to enjoy their tunes. By utilizing Mellis’s “Fab Speaker” plans for open-source consumer electronics, Pease, a student at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, has constructed eye-catching speakers using Mason jars as the housing for the speaker’s electronic components. Powered by three AAA batteries, the unit is constructed with a standard audio jack, ready to plug-and-play your iPod, iPhone, or other popular music storage device.
