Jobs Report Is Dismal

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:36 am

The jobs report is out and it’s bad news. I said last night that the official unemployment rate was 8.3%. This morning it’s 8.1%. Good news? Uh, no. The figure reflects people looking for work, and it appears more people have given up. From noted right-wing shill CNN:

The labor market lost momentum last month as job growth fell to a disappointingly slow pace.

The unemployment rate fell, but that was largely due to people who stopped looking for jobs.

The economy added 96,000 jobs in August, down from 141,000 jobs in July, the Department of Labor said Friday.
Economists polled by CNNMoney were expecting 120,000 jobs to be added in the month.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate fell to 8.1%, from 8.3% in July.

The drop in unemployment was caused because 368,000 people stopped looking for work and therefore were no longer counted in the survey.

Barack Obama and Bill Clinton can talk and talk and talk. But the facts speak for themselves, and the story they tell is not pretty. More from James Pethokoukis.

The Barack Obama of Yesteryear vs. the Barack Obama of Tonight

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 8:39 pm

On a night when everyone else is analyzing Barack Obama’s acceptance speech from 2012, I thought it might be worthwhile to look at Barack Obama’s acceptance speech from 2008.

Here is an actual passage from that speech:

You see, you see, we Democrats have a very different measure of what constitutes progress in this country.

We measure progress by how many people can find a job that pays the mortgage, whether you can put a little extra money away at the end of each month so you can someday watch your child receive her college diploma.

We measure progress in the 23 million new jobs that were created when Bill Clinton was president…

(APPLAUSE)

when the average American family saw its income go up $7,500 instead of go down $2,000, like it has under George Bush. (APPLAUSE)

Let’s use that as a measure.

Unemployment was 7.8% when George Bush left office. It is 8.3% now.

Median income was $54,983 then, and is $50,964 now — $4000 lower.

Will anyone remember how Barack Obama measured success in 2008?

Here’s another stroll down memory lane. As Bubba tells us nobody could turn this economy around in four years, he has an important person saying the opposite: Namely, Barack Obama in 2009:

And I quote: “I will be held accountable. I’ve got four years . . . If I don’t have this done in three years, then there is going to be a one term proposition.”

D’OH!!!

God and Israel

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:39 pm

Both mere afterthoughts for the Democrats.

And that’s being kind. Many actively wanted to exclude both.

UPDATE: Here’s video of Democrats during the addition of references to God and Jerusalem to the platform.

Via Allahpundit, who says: “The takeaway, though, for attack-ad purposes isn’t the boos but the degree of opposition to adding the language in the first place.” He also wonders how Obama could have personally intervened to strengthened the language about recognizing Jerusalem when he has a policy of non-recognition. (At the very least, the White House spokesman refuses to identify Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.)

The answer to that is simple. Pander to the Jewish vote in Florida now, screw Israel later. Duh.

UPDATE: Please do watch that video all the way through to watch L.A.’s mayor lying his ass off about whether 2/3 of the delegates voted to change the platform. Hilarious.

Slick Willie: Those Damn Republicans Sure Did Run Up Our Debt, Huh?

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:34 pm

I couldn’t help it. I listened to it on the radio.

I heard him telling the audience never to forget how the Republicans have run up the debt.

Obama adds $5 trillion to the debt in less than four years, and Slick Willie is blaming US for running up the debt.

Listening to that bumpkin lying like that just reminded me why I despise him so much.

UPDATE: Karl rebutted Bubba before Bubba had even opened his burgerhole.

Has There Ever Been A More Perfect Kinsleyan Statement?

“The government is the only thing we all belong to.”

Obama is not responsible for the content of his nominating convention.

Stadium? Couldn’t fill it. Moving it indoors because of the best weather of the week.

Michelle Obama Speech

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:37 pm

L.A. Times:

Michelle Obama delivered an affectionate tribute to her husband Tuesday night as a man of courage and unshakable conviction, putting a warm gloss on an opening convention program filled with harsh attacks on Republican Mitt Romney.

“I didn’t think it was possible, but today I love my husband more than I did four years ago. Even more than I did 23 years ago, when we first met,” the first lady said in a prime-time speech carried live by the major TV networks. “I love that he’s never forgotten how he started. I love that we can trust Barack to do what he says he’s going to do even when it’s hard – especially when it’s hard.”

Why do I post this? To explain why I don’t think I am going to be “covering” this convention as a blogger. Never mind just being busy in general. I don’t think I can stomach watching bilge like this.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe something will come along that will spark my interest and I’ll catch it on YouTube. But right now I just have zero interest in watching this stuff.

More open threads, here we come!

Open Thread: Democrat Convention

It ain’t like the old days:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The last time Democrats assembled for their national convention, the proceedings were awash in a mix of giddy exuberance and teary emotion as delegates nominated the party’s first African American presidential candidate.

Four years after the party in Denver, that jubilation has cooled.

And that’s the L.A. Times.

Your observations below.
