[UPDATE BELOW] A cyclist was struck and killed in Queens last night by a vehicle that fled the scene. Police say the 37-year-old man was traveling eastbound on Greenpoint Avenue around 9:50 p.m. when he was hit by a dark colored automobile also traveling eastbound. The man, whose identity hasn't been released pending family notification, was declared dead at the scene. Witnesses told the Post that the cyclist was carrying a bouquet of flowers, and that the driver was "flying by at an amazing speed."

Witness Sarah Hennessy said that the car was swerving: "It almost hit a dump truck. It almost hit people in the intersection and me. It almost even hit a cop car sitting there." Police say the investigation is ongoing.

[UPDATE] Another cyclist was killed by a hit and run driver in Brooklyn: according to the Daily News' sources, a male cyclist lost control of his bike at around 2:30 a.m. while riding on Cypress Hills Street in Brooklyn, near the Salem Field Cemetery. The man reportedly hit the rail at the median in the center of the street, and fell onto the road, where a car struck him. The man was taken to Wyckoff Hospital where he was pronounced dead, and the driver of the car sped away.

Not that it doesn't look like Copenhagen has awesome bike lanes, but it also looks like a much smaller and less dense city than NYC.  The beginning of the Copenhagen super-cyclist-highway mentioned at HuffPo looks surrounded by farmland.  It looked like someone biking into Bayside,Queens from Old Bethpage village.

"Police say the investigation is ongoing," so nothing will happen. Ever.

Bhahahahhah! I can't help but laugh at this. If the cyclist would have bothered obeying the traffic regulations he would be alive today. I guess Karma is a bitch...LOL!

  • boomshanka

    Yes, karma is a bitch...

    2 hit and runs?!?!?!
i'm surprised these drivers didn't stop to beat up the cyclist they ran over for touching their cars.
    some people are scum.
hopefully a camera caught the vehicles fleeing the scene.

Came here to share some anti-NYPD snark but I can see my fellow commenters are all over it.

    Gothamist community: bravo.

Sorry to alert you to the fact that we don't all live in your precinct-house heaven, Candide-troll. There are a whole lot of cops committing crimes rather than preventing them.

  • bggb

what in the hell are you talking about?

    I was serious.

  • b8664400

Sorry to have misread your sincerity. Apologies.

And yet no-one knows what kind of car it was!  We arrived literally a minute after it happened and no-one could say what kind of car it was... wonderful!

  • whiteiris

The Post mentioned a witness who said black sedan.

    RIP.

Daily News says it was an Infinity.

  • RobertC

How did this driver almost hit a cop car and then get away? Did the cops even bother to go after the guy, or was it too much trouble for them to actually do something?

  • schmartypants

it was probably parked and unoccupied

  • jimlahey

and in a bike lane, idling.

  • Zeno L

...while giving out tickets to bicyclists for not using the bike lane

  • GeorgeF

Cops were not in the car. They were probably "cuddling" with a drunk girl in her bed or shoving donuts into their fat fuck faces down the block at Dunkin Donuts.

or dealing with a BS call from an ahole like you.
