DMOZ Planned System Outage Notification, Round 2
Over the next three days, we will be making additional upgrades to DMOZ. As with the previous planned outage, we will be taking some parts of the directory offline so that we can complete the work. While the directory content will stay on view throughout the process, all directory submissions will be disabled from Tuesday, July 20 - Thursday, July 22, 2010. The following functionality will be unavailable throughout this planned outage:
    • Site suggestions,
    • Site update requests,
    • New editor applications,
    • Editor & staff feedback, and
    • Public abuse reports.
Neither the Resource Zone public forums nor the DMOZ editor forums will be impacted by this outage. We will provide any additional updates about this outage to the public via this blog.

Thank you again for your patience as we work to upgrade the DMOZ directory!
    Emily

    1. Have you got any details on what functionality is being added to dmoz, or is this just a maintenance exercise?

    3. Hi,

Is this blog somewhere where somebody serious can get some information about the site or is it something too hard to keep up with because thousands of people spray their url every two minutes? Regardless, I might as well ask the questions I have and see if I can reach someone out there.

Before I really knew about online marketing and media and became very reputable in my field, I didn't understand DMOZ, how to submit, or what an editor was actually used for. So, like so many others, I submitted my site tons of times hoping it would work. I actually never saw a submission questionarie pop up so I figured the directory was broken at times.

Then, I thought it would be very smooth to apply to be an editor and promote my site through that medium. Now, I want to venture that I am banned from the site. I'm not 100%, but I believe so. From what I have read on the web, people spray the words, "become an editor, become an editor." Then, they complain that they don't get in.

I obviuosly understand now why becoming an editor of this site helps your odds, and I would run my business the same way. It helps the people who run it know that you and, subsequently your website, are an authority on a particular subject. No financial company in the world, even if you combined Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley could cover these industries. Moreover, if the site is being sponsored by the most popular search engine in the world and is owned by a publicly traded company, the editors can't just throw sites in because they look nice.

With that being said, is there anyway to tell the people who can make this decision that your prior submissions were fly by night, you didn't understand why the site had editors and what the editors are actually useful for? Or would doing so not be worth my time?

    Thx

    Ken

    5. How much does it cost to have a website listed (and don't tell me its free: you will only list sites at your own discretion if and when you feel like doing that).
Also... how is it possible to get access to the inner circle behind dmoz?
No, you don't need to respond. I have made several attempts to list sites as well as to become an editor and it just doesn't work. Good luck! I am not comming back and I do strongly discorage anyone trying to use it.

    12. Hi,

more than one year ago I submitted to Dmoz my website - with the utmost attention to every detail in order to meet dmoz's requirements - but since then I've never heard from them. According to the regulation online there is no reason, as far as I know, that would block my website from being listed, but nevertheless it has NOT been included in Dmoz.

I've tried once again with another website of mine, also meeting all the Dmoz requirements, but also in that case it has NOT been listed.

It would be highly appreciated if editors would send a brief explanation when they decide NOT to list a website as it could also be a profitable way of bettering one's pages on line. Thus providing a general increase in websites' quality standards.
