The Media Research Center had no problem finding outrageous quotes from the liberal media for its Best Notable Quotables of 2009 — and the center's founder and president, Brent Bozell, discussed the “awards” in an exclusive Newsmax interview.

The “winners” of the 22nd Annual Awards for the Year’s Worst Reporting, chosen by a panel of 48 judges, include Katie Couric of CBS and Evan Thomas of Newsweek.

But the top prize for Quote of the Year goes to Melissa Lafsky of Discover magazine. Writing for the Huffington Post in August, after the death of Sen. Ted Kennedy, Lafsky said:

“[One wonders what] Mary Jo Kopechne would have had to say about Ted’s death, and what she’d have thought of the life and career that are being heralded. Who knows — maybe she’d feel it was worth it.”

Bozell, whose organization tracks liberal bias in the media, told Newsmax.TV’s Ashley Martella: “Think about the mind-set here. Think of the utter illogical nature of that statement. What she’s saying is that, if Mary Jo Kopechne were to know what her death ultimately would mean for Ted Kennedy’s career, that she would think it would be worth it for her to be killed by Ted Kennedy,” when in fact her death cost him a chance to be president.

“But this really gets to the mind-set of the left, where the ends really do justify the means,” said Bozell, who also runs the Cybercast News Service. “They actually believe that Ted Kennedy is such a saintly, lionized figure that someone should be willing to be murdered by him in order to advance his career.”

Evan Thomas, assistant managing editor at Newsweek, wins The Audacity of Dopes Award for Wackiest Analysis of the Year for comments he made on MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews” in June.

Martella read the quote: “Obama is, ‘We are above that now. We’re not just parochial, we’re not just chauvinistic, we’re not just provincial. We stand for something.’ I mean, in a way, Obama’s standing above the country, above the world. He’s sort of God. He’s going to bring all different sides together.”

Bozell responded: “When an Evan Thomas turns around and says he has no biases, that Newsweek has no biases, and they have no agenda and are perfectly objective and balanced, except they think that Barack Obama is God, you have to laugh. And it might explain why Newsweek’s circulation has fallen apart, too . . .

“You have to scratch your head and say, I wonder if that’s the same attitude they had for George Bush. When he was president, wasn’t he God too? What makes Obama God but not Bush or Reagan or anyone else?

“This is a press corps that is so deep in the tank for Barack Obama, I think frankly they are embarrassments to this administration.”

The Coronation of the Messiah Award for Fawning Inaugural Coverage goes to ABC’s Bill Weir, who said at Obama’s inauguration: “Never have so many people shivered so long with such joy. From above, even the seagulls must have been awed by the blanket of humanity.”

Bozell said: “I don’t know that we have seagulls in Washington in January. But have you ever heard any kind of coverage of that nature for any other president at his inauguration? Was it historic? Of course it was. So was Ronald Reagan’s in many ways as well. Was there a strong outpouring of support for Ronald Reagan at his inauguration? Yes. Did he get that kind of coverage? Never.

“These people clearly cross the line between covering news events and cheerleading news events.”

Couric wins the Media Hero Award for these words from her Nov. 2 Webcast: “I am honored to be joined today by the Godfather of Green, the King of Conservation: Former Vice President Al Gore.”

Bozell told Martella: “There’s no objectivity there. There’s no attempt whatsoever at balance or objectivity. She’s cheerleading Al Gore for his radical environmental agenda.

“To her it is perfectly acceptable, it is perfectly mainstream, and it should be seen by the American people as that, the only problem being that the American people don’t see it that way. If you look at Al Gore’s global warming hysteria, you see that it is falling apart on the face of the science and it‘s falling apart on the face of public opinion.”

Couric also garners the Let us Fluff Your Pillow Award for Obsequious Interviews. She said during an interview with Obama on “The Early Show” in July:

“You’re so confident, Mister President, and so focused. Is your confidence ever shaken? Do you ever wake up and say, ‘Damn, this is hard. Damn, I’m not going to get the things done I want to get done, and it’s just too politicized to really get accomplished the big things I want to accomplish’?”
Said Bozell: “I ask myself: Did Katie Couric ask those questions of Sarah Palin?

“When it’s a conservative Republican who is in front of the camera, the journalist sees it as his or her responsibility to go on the offensive and to question and to prod and to prick and to argue and to debate. But when it’s a liberal Democrat like Barack Obama, it’s just rose petals that are thrown in the path.”

MSNBC talk show host Ed Schultz wins the Damn Those Conservatives Award for these remarks on “The Ed Show” in September: “The Republicans lie! They want to see you dead. They’d rather make money off your dead corpse. They kind of like it when that woman has cancer and they don’t have anything for her.”

Bozell commented: “I love it how the left is always accusing the right — the Rush Limbaughs, the Sean Hannitys, you, me — of being the haters, of being the people who are negative, the people who participate in character assassination campaigns. There you have it — Ed Schultz, Mister MSNBC, making the most hideous of character assassination attacks, saying we want to kill people, and literally saying it. We want to see them dead.

“Just think what would happen if Rush Limbaugh went on the air and said that about a liberal. It would be the end of his career.”

Finally, The Barbra Streisand Political IQ Award for Celebrity Vapidity goes to comedian Dennis Leary, who said on CNN’s “Larry King Live” in May: “I do have to say that I think that President Obama is the greatest President in the history of all of our presidents, and that he can do no wrong in my book.”

That got this response from Bozell: “This is why you listen to these people from Hollywood and you tell them they really need to stick to memorizing their lines and repeating their lines. Don’t use that mind of yours. Don’t exercise that brain muscle, because you tend to make a fool out of yourself.”
