IEEE Computer Society Adopts Skills Framework for the Information Age

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 29 June, 2012 – The IEEE Computer Society will use the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) to define professional skill levels for its future information technology professional education products.

SFIA, maintained by the nonprofit SFIA Foundation, is the world's leading definition of professional skills in information technology. This open source management resource, which defines 100 professional IT skills across seven levels of attainment, is used by organizations in more than 100 countries.

The IEEE Computer Society will use the SFIA as a key part of its work in defining IT curricula, an IT Competency Model, and an IT Body of Knowledge (ITBoK).

"For the advancement of the IT profession worldwide, an objective statement of capability is essential," said Dante David, product development specialist with the IEEE Computer Society's Certification & Professional Education department. "As an international organization, we are working to assure cross-compatibility in IT qualifications across nations."

The IEEE Computer Society is working with the Canada Association for IT Professionals, the Australian Computer Society, and the Federation for Enterprise Architecture Professional Organizations (FEAPO) in developing the ITBoK. The effort is overseen by the IEEE Computer Society Professional Activities Board's Information Technology Group.
The IT Competency Model will serve as the basis for the ITBoK.

IEEE-CS Certified Software Development Professional Preparation Course Scheduled at SSTC 2012

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 4 April, 2012 – Software developers interested in preparing to take the Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) exam for mid-career professionals will have an opportunity to prepare for the exam at the Systems and Software Technology Conference (SSTC12) in Salt Lake City, Utah.

A two-day CSDP preparation course will be taught at SSTC12 by an IEEE Computer Society certified instructor. It will cover the 11 primary knowledge areas (KAs) of the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK).

After completion of the course, and in preparation for the CSDP examination, attendees will have one month’s access to the online CSDP Preparation Course as well as a discount coupon that can be applied toward the CSDP certification exam.

The online course includes the three foundational KAs that will not be covered in the SSTC preparation course. Together, these courses will help prepare an individual for the CSDP certification exam.

The course will take place on Saturday, 21 April and Sunday, 22 April from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost of the CSDP preparation course is US $395. Preparation course registrants must also be registered for SSTC 12, and may do so at a discounted rate of US $395.

More and more software developers are choosing to earn the CSDP to demonstrate their knowledge and advance in their careers. And, employers are looking for candidates who hold the CSDP certification to help standardize their software development practices.

"The Boeing Software Functional Office recognizes the CSDAP certification as a way to ensure a sound software engineering foundation, resulting in a more efficient and competitive workforce providing higher quality software," said Pierce Gibbs, primary software architect at Boeing IDS.
