7/18/2012

Thanks to brilliant performances at the recent U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field, Ashton Eaton has been named Athlete of the Month by the United States Olympic Committee while Allyson Felix finished third in the women’s voting for the month of June. The USOC made the announcement Wednesday.

Facing difficult weather conditions, Eaton established the world record in the men’s decathlon with his score of 9,039 points during the first weekend of competition at Hayward Field in spacer Eugene, Ore., while Felix cruised to a lifetime best of 21.69 seconds to set the Olympic Trials record in the 200 meters.

Eaton’s performance in the decathlon stole headlines early at the Olympic Trials. Eaton rode world decathlon record performances in both the 100m (10.21) and long jump (8.23m/27-0) to open competition and help him to the overall world record. Eaton came to the final event – the 1,500m – needing to run 4:16.23 to set the world record. It front of 21,795 fans, Eaton came through the finish line in dramatic fashion as Curtis Beach waved him through in a new personal best of 4:14.48.

Pulling away from one of the best American 200m fields ever assembled, Felix took down the 24-year-old Olympic Trials record of 21.77 set by Florence Griffith-Joyner. Felix, who has won spacer three World Outdoor titles in the event and a pair of Olympic silver medals, ran the fourth-fastest time in American history. Her win at the Trials came by .42 seconds over Carmelita Jeter, who ran a lifetime best of 22.11. The margin of victory was the largest in the electronic-timing era at the Olympic Trials.

The efforts by Eaton and Felix also helped each to secure the 2012 Visa Championship Series outdoor titles and a $25,000 check. Both athletes now turn their attention to the London Olympic Games where Eaton will compete in the decathlon and Felix in both the 100m and 200m.

USA gymnast Jordyn Wieber was selected as the USOC women’s Athlete of the Month and the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team was voted Team of the Month. The complete release to the USOC announcement can be found here.
