Dad calls Father’s Day a “Hallmark holiday” but I don’t care. It’s a good excuse to say thanks to the man who taught me to love, respect, and kill plants. If you didn’t read it when I posted it last year, They Donβt Complain and They Die Quietly is worth a re-link, especially today. I still picture him, fresh from work in his business clothes, his tie loosened around his neck, standing in the yard with the hose, watering plants. I also often think of my grandpa, his dad, sitting on a lawn chair in his yard in Arizona, watching the sprinkler wave water back and forth. So today, while I’m watering my ever-increasing numbers of plants, I’ll feel a connection with all the Powazek men, passed down not just in genes, but also in plants.
Thanks, Dad. And happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.
I have the same memories of my father, out tending his garden, unwinding from work each evening. And now I get to watch my own kids follow me around, jumping over the hose, while I visit my own plants. Only difference is now I upload pictures of my plants to Facebook for my dad to see…
