For most franchises a 10-6 record and a fourth divisional crown in five years would be a major accomplishment, but not for the New England Patriots who were the defending Super Bowl champions and had won three of the last four NFL title games. In 2005 the New England Patriots were beset by injuries, lack of overall team speed, and their major competitors in the powerful AFC, the Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers improving while the New England Patriots regressed albeit slightly which was just enough to push them off the top of the mountain in the conference.
In 2008 the New England Patriots should be better simply because they will not be as injury-riddled as they were last season and the influx of speed to their roster. Offensively quarterback Tom Brady was his usual sensational self, earning Pro Bowl honors, but the running game became a question mark due to running back Corey Dillon slowing down a bit and the offensive line's inability to knock opponents off the ball, on defense the injuries especially hurt as all-pro SS Rodney Harrison missed most of the year and linebacker Teddy Bruschi was recovering from open heart surgery and was operating at about 50% of his capacity and ability. Gargantuan DT Vince Wolfork demands a double team on each and every play and is overwhelming against run and will continue to occupy multiple blockers and should only get better in '06, the star of the defensive line is all-pro DE Richard Seymour who equally adept against the run or pass, veterans DE's Jarvis Green and Ty Warren round out a group that is outstanding and experienced. Speedy OLB Roosevelt Colvin leads the line backing group, he is a terrific edge rusher who also can drop into coverage comfortably, ILB Mike Vrabel is one of the most underrated players in the national football league, simply because of his versatility and he also is used on offense in the red zone as a pass catching tight end, rounding out the unit are the aforementioned ILB Tedy Bruschi who if he returns to full health will outstanding once again and Monty Beisel who is a hard hitter who plays with lots of energy’s Rodney Harrison should be at full strength when the season begins which will give the New England Patriots an enormous lift in talent and savvy in their secondary, FS Eugene Wilson and CB Asante Samuel are two young players who are rapidly improving and are approaching Pro Bowl level with veteran CB Chad Scott adding depth and being very capable of stepping in if need be, this unit should be very good and make life miserable for enemy receivers.
The offensive line is a concern of the New England Patriots, but it still has the talent to be an above average group with OT Matt Light and powerful OG Logan Mankins who has the makings of an all-pro will be the standouts with C Dan Koppen and OG Stephen Neal rounding out the unit, which will improve on last year's performance which didn’t please head coach Bill Belichik, the tight ends for the New England Patriots are the best in football period as they have three players at the position who can be superb performers as Benjamin Watson and Daniel Graham have great hands and are good blockers who can stretch the defense in the passing game, with the addition of rookie third round pick David Thomas from the University of Texas they now have unlimited options at the position. The quarterback spot is in great shape with Tom Brady who is a three-time Super Bowl winner and has been an MVP of the game twice as well, Brady may well be the best passer in the NFL, especially with the game on the line, he is simply brilliant, Matt Cassell will assume the second string QB role due to the retirement of Doug Flutie and should be a good fit in that role, as long as Tom Brady is in one piece the position is a major strength. With RB Corey Dillon starting to slow down a bit the New England Patriots drafted University of Minnesota runner Laurence Maroney with their first round choice, who is a punisher runner who can get to the outside and run by opponents as well move the pile up the middle, Dillon and Maroney should make a tremendous combo and have the ability to wear defenses out, with elusive scat back Kevin Faulk adding a change of pace, Faulk is also very valuable in the passing game with his sure hands. Deion Branch is quickly becoming an elite wide receiver with his blazing speed and sticky hands, veteran Reche Caldwell was acquired from the San Diego Chargers this off-season and was slated to be a starter, but they may change due to the fact that the New England Patriots selected University of Florida burner Chad Jackson with their second round pick.
Jackson is a polished route runner and pass catcher who more than likely will be starting by midseason which only enhances the depth and talent base at the position. Place-kicker Martin Gramatica was a multiple pro bowler with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and if he regains his old form he will be one of the best in the game again, Josh Miller will handle the punting duties for the New England Patriots. With better health and a influx of new talent through the draft and free agency the New England Patriots will be the team to beat in the AFC East but will get a stiff challenge from the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills, but should win 11 to 12 games and be among the AFC's elite once again and a legitimate threat to represent the conference in the Super Bowl...Great moment in team history.....January 3, 2002 In perhaps the most exciting Super Bowl ever the New England Patriots were two touchdown underdogs to the powerful St. Louis Rams but found a way to slow the "greatest show on turf" down enough and defeat them 20-17 as K Adam Viniatieri kicked a 48-yd. field goal on the final play of the game.
