1972 All Over Again

Newspapers closed. Early-morning arrests by plainclothed police.

Uncertainty hangs in the air as the crackdown on alleged coup conspirators in the wake of President Arroyo’s declaration of a state of national emergency yesterday begins as Rep. Crispin Beltran (PL – Anakpawis) was arrested this morning on the strength of a 1985 warrant of arrest. Rep. Satur Ocampo (PL – Bayan Muna) himself managed to evade the clutches of police in the nick of time, even as two of his aides were nabbed instead.

Both men are known leftists and vocal critics of the President and her administration.

More arrests are expected throughout the day and into the rest of the weekend.

Meanwhile, Palace officials distance themselves from the dawn raid at The Daily Tribune’s [Sadly offline - Ed.] offices as a spokesman trenchantly dares opponents of emergency rule to go to court.

The ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) now reports retired Philippine Constabulary general Ramon Montaño is under arrest. He and a group of retired generals had earlier urged the President to resign.

This post has been reclassified under the State of Emergency category.

[...] I could only nod in agreement with what the Unlawyer wrote: It’s “1972 all over again”. Ironically, what we ended before returned exactly 20 years later. [...]
