Node.js: One Language to Rule Them All

September 28, 2012 - by aaronheckmann

We at 10gen are thrilled about our ongoing partnership with Joyent and our upcoming participation in the NodeStack online conference. I’ll be giving a presentation at the conference on Node.js and MongoDB. Here’s a preview of what I’ll be talking about:

Individually, MongoDB and Node.js are both powerful tools. Using them together, however, further amplifies the ease of use, scalability, and resiliency that developers can derive from using these tools on their own. MongoDB’s document-oriented model is ideal for the modern object-oriented programmer. Node.js provides one language to rule them all -- from a client side, server side, and database administration standpoint. These capabilities make it substantially easier to build end-to-end applications, boosting developer productivity. In my discussion at NodeStack, I’ll walk viewers through how these benefits manifest themselves using real life use cases and demos.

I hope you’ll join me at 10:00 AM PST on Wednesday, October 17 for my presentation at NodeStack.

illumos / ZFS Days - and a Party!

September 25, 2012 - by joyentlindsay

Back in April, Joyent sponsored and ran a highly successful conference all about DTrace. Which got us thinking that it was time to do the same for another of our favorite technologies, ZFS.

As it happened, the same great venue was available at a time when we knew lots of people would be in San Francisco. So we're holding illumos and ZFS Days next week. This two-day event will be your opportunity to catch up on the illumos family (including, of course, Joyent's SmartOS ) and ZFS, and hear what's new and what's coming in this powerful family of technologies. This is not a pay-for-play event where you get stuck listening to marketing pitches: just good, solid technology talks by the top minds who are actually building the software. Don't believe me? Have a look at this speaker list.

For those not familiar, illumos is the open source fork of OpenSolaris, and is the parent kernel to Joyent's own SmartOS, as well as several other distributions. You'll get a chance to hear from the illumos project's founder and its community manager, as well as companies that have built their businesses on illumos, and

Voxeo Labs Adds Telco APIs and Mobile VoIP to Joyent’s Global Cloud Network

September 12, 2012 - by joyentlindsay

Voxeo Labs, a San Francisco-based technology company leading the industry in real-time carrier APIs, today announced that it has joined the Global Cloud Network (GCN); an alliance of mobile carriers who run their cloud on Joyent’s SmartDataCenter fabric. In joining the GCN, Voxeo Labs is helping to deliver the world’s first Mobile PaaS.

Voxeo Labs exposes communication APIs as standalone infrastructure for Mobile OTTs looking to become Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) or as a complement to existing IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and network API strategies of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs). With this announcement, Voxeo Labs is making its entire suite of products available to the GCN, enabling carrier members to build real-time mobile services and attract innovation from a growing ecosystem of developers using Voxeo Labs technologies.

Progressive carriers like Deutsche Telekom have understood the need to expose their networks through this type of innovation. For example, the recently launched Telekom Tropo API is built on Voxeo Labs technologies – giving web and mobile developers access to lucrative new geographies in partnership with an industry giant.

“We’re delighted to offer this turnkey solution to members of the GCN. The ability to auto-scale Mobile

Node Summit: Everything is a Node: The Rise of M2M and Mobile

September 05, 2012 - by joyentlindsay

Most of us carry around mobile “machines” that generate all sorts of data about us and our environment without any human input. Machine-generated data is in between user- and science-generated data in terms of size and will require an entirely updated approach to infrastructure. Watch as Ericsson Senior Vice President of Strategy and CTO Vish Nandlall explains how his company is facing these challenges.
