Alito returns Dobson’s favors

by Mark Kleiman

James Dobson has a right to his anti-gay bigotry — for example, his support for the Federal Marriage Amendment — and his other far-out political positions, such as his support of the largely successful effort to make the Air Force Academy hostile territory for non-fundamentalists; recently, Dobson’s influence was instrumental in beating back a draft Air Force policy that would have put some limits on proselytism.

And Samuel Alito, even as a Supreme Court justice, has a right to return the favor Dobson did Alito by promoting Alito’s nomination and confirmation by writing Dobson www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/6743.html“>an effusive thank-you letter that Dobson, predictably, is using to help the fund-raising and political-organizing efforts of Focus on the Family.

Dear Dr. Dobson,

This is just a short note to express my heartfelt thanks to you and the entire staff of Focus on the Family for your help and support in the past few challenging months. I would also greatly appreciate it if you would convey my appreciation to the good people from all parts of the country who wrote to tell me that they were praying for me and for my family during this period.

As I said when I spoke at my formal investiture at the White House last week, the prayers from so many people from around the country were a palpable and powerful force. As long as I serve on the Supreme Court, I will keep in mind the trust that has been placed in me.

I hope that we will have the opportunity to meet personally at some point in the future. In the meantime, my entire family and I hope that you and the Focus on the Family staff know how much we appreciate all that you have done.

Sincerely Yours,

Samuel Alito

But please, let’s not hear any more about how Alito was just a fair-minded advocate of politically neutral Constitutional theories, unfairly pilloried as a reactionary by deceived or deceiving liberal politicians. He was, and remains, a diligent and active partisan of the right wing.
